Its a legitimate point. Considering the location of maldives they will eventually have to join Indian union. China, INdia and Usa are going to have mega games in the Indian ocean in the future and they don't wanna be located right in the middle of it alone and unprotected.

Maldives is rather more closely with China than India.

India doesnt even fall in the ballpark between the upcoming tussle between USA & China.

Especially since China is 50 years ahead of India, who do you think the Maldives will pick?

And if India gets between the fight of China & USA it will surely get spanked.

We need Bhutan and Nepal, Nepal and Bhutan in Indian union will make Chinese one step back in south Asia. If Chinese needs to be countered then these states should be accepted as Indian states.

We don't need to. We have a very special relationship with both Nepal and Bhutan.

With Nepalese and Indians having inter marriage relationship, there is open border, Indian grants Nepali citizens almost all privileges that Indian citizen while the Nepalese Gurkha join our army and fight for our country.

With Bhutan we again have open borders and Bhutan and they enjoy the same priv that Nepalese enjoy.

This relationship has worked very well for all parties. Both these countries are unique culturally (Nepal is the only Hindu country) so lets not change that.

And regarding Maldives its anyways going under water. Why should we bother about it esp. after what happened recently.

South Asia is becoming more and more chinese influenced. To counter that we need some agreements to tie them with India so that There will be only one Big brother in Indian sub continent.

We need special agreements or may have to accept them as our states. This is not about forcing any nation to join India, But taking some serious steps to counter raising China.

India do not want China - Indian border states to fall prey for Chinese and become unstable, What is China bullies them and takes them under their sphere of influence??
India needs to be proactive and have to make sure no power ever challenges it in south asia. Only way to counter the rising dragon is make sure they can never meddle in Nepal, Bhutan and Maldives.

So making them as Indian states is the best way forward.

we do have given some special status to Union territories so make them union territories and give them special status, Only foreign policy and defense will be in the hands of Delhi and the remaining will be in the the hands of locals.

The present president came to power at Gun point and not by democracy so he has to go and the real one in India is elected one by the people so no problem there.

Once he returns to power Maldives foreign policy will favor India.

Again US is also moving ahead of inducting Puerto Rico as 51st state.
