It is childish to bringing the shooting down of the Atlantique into the equation as the Atlantique incident followed the Kargil war and had a lot to do with the Pakistani conduct in that war.

True, the Atlantique incident must be seen in the context of the brutal torture and mutilation of IAF pilots at the beginning of the Kargil war.

Your heart's in the right place (and hats off to the Pak Army too for their professional response) but comparing the Atlantique incident to this is like comparing Apples to Oranges.

I do agree sir that there are some situational differences but u cannot deny the similarities either. Pakistan could have shot down our chopper and given the exact same reasons as we gave after shooting down their aircraft and still gotten away with it.

The last time a Pak navy aircraft ventured ( supposedly) in to India air space we shot it down killing 16 Pakistanis. here is a brief description of what happened.

10 August ,1999
The French-built naval plane Breguet Atlantique (Breguet Br.1150 Atlantique) plane, flight Atlantic-91, c/n 33, of 29 Squadron was one of Pakistan Navy's frontline aircraft, used primarily for patrol and reconnaissance. Atlantic-91 left Mehran (Sindh province) Naval Base in Pakistan at 9:15 a.m. (PST). An Indian Air Force ground radar picked up the flight path of the plane approaching the International Border. Two IAF Mig-21 interceptor aircraft of No.45 Squadron, from the Indian airbase at Naliya in the Kutch region, were soon scrambled by the Indian Air Force. After a series of maneuvers—and a conflicting version of events from both sides—the two jets were given clearance to shoot down the Pakistani plane.[6] At 11:17 a.m. IST (10:47 a.m. PST), nearly two hours after takeoff from Pakistan, the Atlantique was intercepted and an infrared homing R-60 air-to-air missile was fired at it by Squadron Leader P.K. Bundela, hitting the engine on the port side of the plane. This resulted in the aircraft losing control and spiraling towards a crash at approximately 1100 hours PST and approximate location 23°54′N 68°16′E, killing all 16 on board the Atlantic-91, including five officers of the Pakistan Navy.

The incident was the Pakistan Navy's only loss of an aircraft to hostile fire in its history, and the biggest combat-related casualty for the navy since the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.

An Indian military chopper crossed into Pakistan's territory today. Pakistan could have done the exact same thing as we did with their naval aircraft but instead they acted responsibly and any potential clash was duly averted.

The point is we always blame Pakistan for terror blasts ,kargil etc. But sometimes even an enemy can teach a lesson.

Thank you Pakistan for returning our crew.

I know you being emotional here but hey! there is a lot more difference btw these two incidents!

That Atlantique incident took place right after kargil war within a month after of it, there was anger on both sides, and yeah do you forgot they killed our captured IAF pilot Sqn Ldr Ajay Ahuja during that time??

What i am saying is there is huge difference between that time 1999 and now! Pakistanis should have done the same at that time! period!

BUT

I am not undermining the level of maturity pakistanis have shown in this incident! What i am saying is don't compare situation of that time with now! pakistanis have done a great job yesterday and they showed the maturity level in this particular incident and understood it that it was a genuine mistake!

These types of incidents will help in confidence building and also help in improving the relation!

Thank you GoP and PA for handling this situation maturely :)

Refer to post #39 by nForce. The main difference here is that the Atlantique incident was immediately after Kargil, naturally suspicions on both sides were at their peak whereas this is peacetime and the reasons given by IA were perfectly reasonable and obviously the PA thought so too.

But yes, this gesture by Pakistan should be commended and we can look forward to letting them off the hook next time. Plus, this incident is a good demo of the efficiency of the hotline between IA and PA.

do the names major haroon ashiq and capt. khurram ashiq of SSG ring any bells??the left army after 9/11 and joined iliyas kashmiri, need i mention haroon killed maj. gen faisal alavi of the SSG.

haroon trained the 26/11 terrorists as per syed saleem shahzad who even american govt. believes had been killed by the ISI

No need of pointing out any more evidences....let them beleive what their masters want them to believe.

At least they left army and do their dirty business but what about Lt.Colonel Purhoit Serving member of Indian Military Intelligence supplying RDX to terrorist to blow up Samjhota express and other Muslim populated areas? Compare "Serving" Member with "Retired" member and one more thing before accusing some one, one should check itself first and then point fingers at others

Undoubtedly a great gesture of trust from Pakistan but to equate it with the Atlantique incident would be to muddy the whole scenario.Would Pakistan have been just as gracious if instead of a harmless Cheetah the bird in question was a lethal SU-30MKI straying across the border?Perhaps if the SU-30MKI didn't comply with their radio calls to land?Naturally not,Because their primary objective is to safeguard their mainland regardless of the extraneous conditions. The Breguet Atlantique that can carry air-to-surface missiles or modified cruise missiles has to be seen in the same light.

The IAF acted within it's given range of protocols over the Atlantique incident where they first tried to establish contact with the plane and then attempted to force it to land.Unfortunately,it came down to the last resort when the Breguet Atlantique crew refused to comply and tried to outmaneuver the IAF jets.A tragic turn of events yes but the same fate would have been in store for the Cheetah crew if they had ignored the Pakistani establishment's calls to land.

Till now above is only part of allegations. Wait till the court has delivered a verdict on him.

Speech is silver but silence is golden. !!
It was a Sqn Ldr Ajay Ahuja, who was killed when his MiG-21 was shot down after violation of Pakistani air space, where as Flt. Lt. Nachiketa was taken alive and repatriated back to India.

Its interesting to notice that Sqn Ldr Ajay Ahuja had GSWs over his body, which were from small arms.

So,he ejects from his jet after being hit,he lands and then PA shoots him instead of taking prisoner?

after all the broo-haa-haa from the Indians and Pakistanis on this topic, PAK army did the right thing by safely releasing the Indian soldiers and the helicopter.

NICE WORK PA & IA!

I really hope this event leads to a peaceful & prosperous future between the 2 neighbors

Maybe he tried to do the rambo thingy- logical thing would have been to shoot him- you cannot risk your soldiers life just to capture one downed pilot-
Flt. Lt. Nachiketa did the right thing- surrender-
