India shall go to any extent to root out terror: PM

Asserting that government will never compromise with those using gun, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [Images] on Saturday said the government will go to any extent to root out terrorism from the country but was open to hold dialogue with those lying down arms.

"The growing menace of terrorism and naxalism is a cause of worry. The government will not compromise with terrorism," Dr Singh told media persons in Shillong.

"There were some initial setbacks, but we will overcome them. The government will go to any extent to root out terrorism from the country," the prime minister said, referring to the terrorist strikes in Mumbai [Images], Delhi [Images] and Assam.

Notwithstanding Islamabad's [Images] rejection of extraditing anyone to India, the prime minister asked Pakistan to hand over 'criminals' responsible for these strikes to face trial here.
He also hoped that the new government in Bangladesh would not allow its territory to be used for terrorist acts against India especially in the North East.

Dr Singh hoped that 'some sense' would prevail on the leadership of Pakistan and it recognises that those behind the 'horrible acts' in Mumbai have to be brought to justice.

"It (Pakistan) has to take action on the demand from all civilised countries that the perpetrators (of Mumbai attacks) will be brought to book. We hope that these criminals will be handed over to us to face trial," he said.

Asked whether the Centre was open to talks with the banned ULFA, he said, "All insurgent groups must recognise that their only course open to them is to lay down arms. We will never compromise with those who believe in use of gun to get solution to their real or imaginary problems."

He said insurgents and terrorists must recognise that gun is no solution to get their demands met.

"Once they lay down arms as Indian citizens, we are willing to talk to anybody," he said.

I wonder what he means by "to any extent".

I think by "going to any extent" he meant that it shall be done even if it means exposing India itself...like the Indian produced terrorists responsible for Samjhota Express blasts
One could not agree more.

And people say Pakistan is creating unnecessary panic and war hysteria.
India thinks its neighbours are the ones trying to hurt India in any way they can, but it's rather the other way around.

We're reading too much into the statement made, the purpose behind it was to sort of convey a message. I do hope PM Singh does mean it, and will initiate an operation 'House Sweep', and Pakistan on the other side will do the same too as it has been doing for well over 8 years now.

Unfortunately the goodwill ends there because PM Singh also said "more of the same" by repeating the rhetoric and trumping the same drum that's been trumped to the point it can't trump no more. Pakistan is doing everything it needs to. It's time India stop threatening Pakistan with "our friends will agree with us" kind of statements because Pakistan too has influential friends. This tit for tat can go on another 60 years. This is not what we want.

India! Get your own act together. Stop suppressing minorities, and don't let US and other warmongoring nations drag you into a conflict that can prove to be costly and at the very least deadly. Both nations are a result of the common struggle that took place in 1940s. Let us not put the sacrifices of our heros to shame and go to waste in vain by all this unnecessary rhetoric that keeps both nations eye-balling each other while invading forces stand at our doorsteps. Work together, jointly and honestly. There's much to be gained from genuine cooperation.

Now that is something I would like to see, India sweeping its own house, and Pakistan continues to weed out any taliban or extremist activity inside its own areas.
Perhaps both nations can share intel (which has failed recently in the Mumbai issue), improve ties because they're actually fightning the same war but inside their own borders, and PERHAPS...they migh even help eachother militarily.
I'm looking too far ahead, but co-operation would be much better then flexing muscles and threatening eachother with death and destruction.

.
Hollow statements! If they wanted to "go to any extent" they would have done so already. Just the dying words of a propaganda campaign, defeated by Pakistan.

Its sad how Hindustani government is blackmailed by war mongers and Hindu extremists into issuing statements like these and influence her policies.

Most of the Indians think pakistan common public may be innocent; but not govt. Govt might support the terrors for what so ever reason. Mushrraf might be lost his chair, everyone believes he is patriotic. But he had to help talibans to retain his chair. So in my view (MY) it LOOKS like pakistan is unfair against terrors. In the sense TERRORS to India might not be terrors to pakistan. I dont think this difference will end soon. By force/law pakistan has to fight against ppl who are declared as terrors by US. This is where India trying to oooo US to get the job done.

there have been massive bombing in india during 2008 and almost all of them had domestic links. now tell me y has indian gov failed to root out these groups? in some of the other incidents it has been proved that ur politicians and ur army men were also involved. now i guess india is also unfair against terrors. and based on this pakistanis also think indian common public may be innocent but not the indian establishment. by force/law india has to fight against ppl who are involved in terror activities against both indians and pakistanis. this is what pakistan is tryin to get in ur minds that u have to deal with similar kind of problems which pakistan has. so u r no better than us and we need to work together.

oh please, he may as well just say it that he wants to go to war with Pakistan. No need for the bullshit, he just needs to come out ans say it open and clean.

Same old warmongering BS - then a few days later he'll come out with a bald faced lie of 'India does not desire war' and 'we never threatened war', when that is exactly what MMS and his coterie of dissembling windbags in the GoI have been doing.

Pakistan has already ruled out extradition, and there is nothing in the Pakistani constitution that allows extradition to India- we have no such treaty or agreement.

Pakistan has offered joint investigations and prosecution in Pakistan from day one, provided India shares the evidence and cooperates. India has steadfastly refused.

It is up to India to determine whether she is sincere about punishing the perpetrators of Mumbai, or merely acting like an arrogant, belligerent bully.
