India sets stage for $2.4bn transport aircraft contest



India has approved a $2.4 billion contest to acquire 56 transports to replace the air force's Hindustan Aeronautics-built Hawker Siddeley HS 748s, setting the stage for a possible showdown between the Airbus Military C295 and Alenia Aermacchi C-27J.

The planned acquisition was approved on 23 July by India's Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), says the country's defence ministry. Headed by defence minister AK Antony, the DAC oversees the military's entire acquisition process.


The ministry was unable to state when a request for proposals will be issued for the requirement. Industry sources, however, have said this could occur before the end of 2012.

In late March, industry sources attending the Defexpo 2012 show in New Delhi provided Flightglobal with details of the requirement.

Based on a request for information issued in 2010, 16 aircraft will be obtained in a flyaway condition, and 40 produced under licence in India. One source said the programme will represent a major first, with licensed production of the aircraft to be farmed out to a private sector company, and not HAL.

While India has yet to produce a major private sector airframer, a number of the country's large industrial conglomerates, such as Larsen & Toubro, Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata have been steadily building up their aerospace units in recent years.

India could require that the first aircraft be delivered within two years of a contract signing, with the next 15 to follow within a further 24 months. A one-year pause would ensue, followed by the remaining 40 aircraft being produced in India at a rate of eight per year.

At the Defexpo show, Airbus Military representatives highlighted the C295's role as the workhorse of several air forces. Alenia Aermacchi stressed the C-27J's commonality with the Lockheed Martin C-130J; a type that entered Indian air force service in 2011.

As IAF has confirmed a total of 18 C-130J and may be another 12 more on order till 2015. It is likely that IAF will order C27J due to its similarity with the C-130Js.

looks like india is planning to overhaul complete military hardware to new one.
u guys are lucky to have a decent defense minister not like ours... involved in many scams already in one and half years in office.

Ever one is innocent unless found guilty :D IAF would be new AF with in 2 decades .

Yeah! And the deal for Grippen is likely for the delay of LCA. I am sure that Mirage 200 from FAF is also on the cards as well.
No and no, if LCA is delayed more Rafales or MKI will be ordered for the interim. M2ks are a no go, as is the last batch of Rafales will replace the upgraded M2ks, no point in entering into lenghty contractual obligations to get second hand M2ks-that isn't how India rolls anymore! lol!

So why the DRDO's chief had a flight on NG, just because of the fact that he wants to have trip to sky???:rofl: There is something that they don't want you(and others as well) to know.

DRDO chief on a NG does not signal much, DRDO is not a part of the evaluation process - its between the IAF and the MoD.

To cover the delay , we are inducting MRCA :P Our future AF will have
Tejas-CAS/Interceptor
Rafale-Strike/Multirole
Super30-Air superiority/Multi Role
Then FGFA will supplement Mki , AMCA will supplement Rafale by replacing Mirages,Mig27s,Jaguars ...

Thats means project IL-214 is near to death.

Russia also don't want buy them due to development of better plane, & now IAF goes to C-130.

So will they going to order more MKIs and what are the current final numbers are? I have heard that about 300 MKIs. I think they should also look towards MiG-35s

No need for more MKIs as we are gonna get 5th gen plane in near future.

MKIs numbers are 280.

We will be getting Rafale in between.

Mig 35 will create MRO problems we already have many different fighter planes.
