India set to become $2 trillion economy in 2014: IMF

these math is bull crap. chinese should understand it better. you guys have overtaken US in just 30 years because of your mass. india has the mass. it has the much younger population than china . it is just the time when india will rival china.

China has a much lower dependency ratio than India:

Age dependency ratio (% of working-age population) | Data | Table - World Bank

That means India has more dependents (elderly and children) depending on each working age person than China does.

.
We didn't create any mischief.

It was Modi's "more assertive foreign policy" that created the mischief there. And then shortly after by killing 20 civilians on the border with Pakistan.

Maybe he's looking for another Forward Policy, who knows.

india didn't go into chinese territory, it was china that came into indian territory.

yes modi is assertive, but he also means business. he will do business with china.

any escalation between india and china is bad for both.

.
It was an observation that I was genuinely interested in.

I have seen a lot of Indians here who think India is somehow "closing the gap" with China.

Which of course defies basic mathematics. Since China has a much larger base economy AND a higher percentage growth rate than India does, obviously the gap is not decreasing, but rather the gap is increasing.

Our GDP was equivalent to India's in the year 1990. The ratio was almost 1:1 exactly.

Today the ratio is 5:1.

I have a different observation. In he HISTORY OF THE WORLD, EVERY OTHER DICTATORSHIP has given only misery and pain. Your own 'miracle' is just an exception, and not even all of chinese history, most of your communist history has been marked will millions dead. You are sitting on a explosive powder keg if you don't resolve that. Maybe instead of doing chicken $hit comaprisons you should look at the risk of political turmoil that can wipe out your accomplishments.

You sound like we just willingly, and with full knowledge of his crimes, elected a mass murderer.

Oops, that was you. :P

Modi is more of a dictator than anyone else. Whereas China's President is powerless without the consensus from the Politburo, and the Standing Committee.

Not to mention the fact that Modi is a mass murderer.

It is Modi who is escalating things, on both the borders with China and with Pakistan.

Just a few days ago he killed 20 civilians on the Pakistani side of the border.

Looks like we might be in for another Forward Policy soon.

What BS. Though I never supported him myself, the moment the Indian people decided the vote, I accepted him the PM of India. Does that ever happen in your country? Though I detest the fact that a communal right winger is PM, as long as he enjoys the confidence of the people, I will not interfere. You think he's a dictator like the Chinese? He loses a vote and he himself will resign. Do you have that in your country. And the shelling across the border? It's his job and he's doing it.

in india pak case, india is a status quo power. it doesn't want internationalization of Kashmir, but by starting a border skirmish, it will do the what it doesn't want. now you can guess who started all these between india and pak

So what do you suggest us to do Mr PDF THINK TANK: ANALYST ,whatever that is supposed to mean??Take all the casualties by the Pak firing lying down on the ground and do nothing??!!Is that what you want us to do??You always rant about how Modi did killed,How India killed Pakistanis but you conveniently forget that it all started due to the indiscriminate and unprovoked firing by the Pak Rangers which resulted into 10 or so civilian deaths and many more wounded!!A true Chinese Han you are!!

you know very well they were killing indians on the border but you just ignore it to make your point ..nice

I thought India was supposed to have crossed the $2 trillion mark several years ago.

Back when I joined this forum, it was always the "$2 trillion Indian economy" vs the "$5 trillion Chinese economy".

China's economy is now around $10 trillion. How times change.

India was supposed to be a 2 trillion dollar economy in 2012 (not several years ago) but due to our economic woes it has happened this year.

. . .
98!!! Why??

98!!! Why??
India supposed to become 2trillion economy before 2012!!! but we were doomed!!! too slow!!! now we need atleast 8% growth to make it grow faster!!! our next big target is 5tril!
It wasn't like we were doomed, not to forget the country has gone through 2 economic crises in 3yrs time, global economic crisesin 2008 &european crises in 2011, our base wasnt strong and we just couldn't hold of our economic growth after 2011 ,we could hv reached 2trill in 2012,but dipreciation of the rupee from 45 in 2011 to around 60 in 2012 and 68 in aug'13 cut our growth in DOLLAR terms and made it seem like the economy has remained stagnant fr the past 3yrs even though it was still growing in rupee terms, but now things have improve,we have a strong command over rupee now and enough reserves to not be effected from US tampering next year, which is said to hit ''emerging'' nations hard. 8% is no child play it will take time.even china slowed from 10% in 2011 to 7.5% in 2013,keep your fingures crossed,we will retain our 8% growth, hopefully :)

.
We should have done it n 2011. It is a bit later than expected.

Anyway, we have a chance to again get back to high growth rates. If things go well, we should cross most of the large European economies in the next few years.

The next 1-2 decades are going to be very exciting for India just like the last 2 decades have been, only more.
