India Sends Stealth Warships to South China Sea
http://thediplomat.com/2016/05/india-sends-stealth-warships-to-south-china-sea/

On May 18, four ships of the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet set out for a two and a half month long operational deployment to the South China Sea and North Western Pacific, according to a recent press statement by the Indian Ministry of Defense.

“In a demonstration of its operational reach and commitment to India’s ‘Act East’ policy, the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet, under the command of Rear Admiral SV Bhokare, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet, sailed out today,” the press release states.

The small naval force that left the Indian shores today consists of the 6,200-ton Shivalik-class guided-missile stealth frigates Satpura andSahyadr armed, among other things, with supersonicanti-ship and land-attack cruise missiles; the 27,550-ton Deepak-class fleet tankerShakti, one of the largest surface warships in the Indian Navy; and the 1,350-ton Kora-class guided missile corvette Kirch, armed with sub- and super-sonic anti-air and anti-ship missiles.

The dispatch of the fleet has the dual purpose of strengthening military diplomatic ties and enhancing inter-operability with other navies. The Indian warships are slated to make port calls at Cam Rahn Bay in Vietnam, Subic Bay in the Philippines, Sasebo in Japan, Busan in South Korea, Vladivostok in Russia, and Port Klang in Malaysia.

“The visits to each port will last four days and are aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing inter-operability between the navies. During the stay in harbor, various activities such as official calls and professional interaction between naval personnel of both the nations have been planned,” the defense ministry notes.

The fleet will also conduct passing exercises (PASSEX) with other navies to practice cooperation and “showing the flag” in a region “of vital strategic importance to India,” according to the defense ministry. The fleet’s operational deployment will culminate in its participation in Exercise Malabar, a naval exercise held with the U.S. Navy and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), to take place off Okinawa in Japan in the second half of June.

As I reported previously, Japan’s participation is not new—the JMSDF have joined in 2007, 2009, and 2014 respectively—but this year will be the first time that Japan is not a foreign invitee but rather a permanent member of the annual naval exercise.

The ships of the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet, the largest out of a total of three fleets, are distributed among bases on the Indian east coast including Kolkata, Paradip, and Chennai, as well as on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The total strength of the fleet is around 60 vessels. The Eastern Naval Command is headquartered at Visakhapatnam in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

Bravo India !!! We'd like to see the Indian Navy in the South China Sea more often.

Welcome to Cam Ranh Bay naval base !!!!!!

As expected west will start clapping as we get active into SCS.

Massive Respect.... Very aggressive stand my india in the region(SCS) so far . Time to ramp up our new strategy with actual message ! Provocation will lead to major escalation ... Vietnam and India should enter agreement to enter war if any attacked by china . Same like Nato pacts...

Please do not blow this out of proportion, India has no aggressive designs neither any intent to be hostile to china. It's a simple exercise. Keep it to that.

Sir, I think sometimes we need to show plainly what we can do in case China keeps continuing it's policy of opposing India at every turn.

Like you said, It could be routine but it could be a warning to China.

Two and a half month long operational deployment is now a 'simple exercise'? Really who buys this crap?

It's China's job to do so. China Has been arming Pakistan just enough to keep us busy in the west, and we haven't done anything about it. Sending a warship doesn't make any difference in SCS, but a strong "look east" and strong Africa foreign policy creating competition creates a better statement. Peace with China won't come from military confrontation but financial settlement of trade sectors.

What if it's not a simple exercise?
What can China do to India what it is not already doing? FFS, it has supported terrorists in UN who attacked India.

At this point, there is nothing worse China can do than it is already doing.

People who can read and comprehend the written word, hopefully that answers your "who". Read the article and learn the nature of deployment, and for everyone else's sake, use a dictionary.

The GoI is still hesitant to take up Vietnam's offer to set up a permanent Indian Base in Vietnam at Cam Ranh ..... but I see something coming up sometime in future as India has also aligned US towards some sensible approach to Vietnam and we do have Vietnam to credit for training the first batch of instructors for our Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School, a school even US has sent it troops to for exposure and which Indians made very clear is credit to Indo-Vietnamese cooperation and friendship.

Lets hope that we continue to cooperate as closely in future too

India has been moving its naval assets much to the chagrin of Chinese through SCS regularly. We have our patrolling beyond SCS as part of our freedom of navigation approach. While we do not align with US moves, we certainly ensure that the Chinese do not get the idea that Indian Navy will not move through SCS.

Two years back the Chinese started asking Indian flotilla moving to Japan to leave ... and kept asking .. sending their warships to trail .... and Indians kept sailing and as they say .. rest is history .... we move and will move through SCS as we move into Pacific ... control of SLOCs with countries to south and east of China is essential to ensure uninterrupted commerce and nowadays even Chinese are not having the rerun of that episode ... it is only US which is being fingered ....!!!

Agreed, let's keep it subtle.
Wait for the other side to make some noise first.
