India’s Ministry of Defence has sought to buy four strategic Tu-22M3 bombers and other latest high-tech weaponry from Russia, Interfax reported. This was expressed in the official stand of the ‘Make in India’ Programme at the INNOPROM International Industrial Exhibition in Yekaterinburg.

Interfax reported that, in addition to the bombers, the Indian Air Force is also seeking to purchase 80 Mi-17 helicopters and six Il-76 airplanes, in which the Israeli radar system, the ‘Falcon,’ can be installed.

The Indian Defence Ministry is also keen to acquire modern missile systems, and would like to buy twelve S-400 ‘Triumf’ anti-aircraft missile systems.

New long-range Russian bomber to be different

At the official ‘Make in India’ stand, officials indicated a desire to lease two nuclear submarines of the Akula-2 (‘Akula’ means Shark) class, with the option to purchase them after the completion of their lease terms.

RIA Novosti had earlier reported that Russia would soon be able to deliver a second nuclear submarine of the Project 971 Shchuka-B (‘Schuka’ means pike) to India, after the relevant contract is signed. The first such submarine, named the ‘Chakra’, was delivered to the Indian Navy under lease in 2012.

At the Indian stand in the Yekaterinburg exhibition, officials said India was planning to produce over 1,000 T-90S tanks and 200 Ka-226 helicopters under the ‘Make in India’ programme.

The BrahMos cruise missiles, which are being developed in India with the participation of the Russian company NPO Mashinostroyeniya, are currently being successfully tested. The export version of the Russian anti-ship missile P-800 Oniks – the ‘Yakhont’ – has been used as the base to develop the new missile.

I dont think India need strategic bombers, they are concept of past..may be Russia is attaching it as a string to keep its bomber program alive.! I am sure , India wont buy any strategic bombers like TU or B2 as its not our need as of now!!

I believe, given its range and long endurance, it will be more suited for long distance anti-shipping and maritime defense roles more than carpet bombing.

Yes exactly , I dont understand why people neglect the fact we have huge Maritime boundary to guard. I personally think if the deal goes through two would be stationed in east coast and two in west coast where we already have P8 and Tu140.

These bombers will be most likely second hand as they are not produced anymore so nothing like 'keeping the bomber program alive'....also I believe few bombers with great combat radius can be handy with our interests in vast Indian ocean region...

Then uncle Sam must be a fool to operate bombers even today.
India does require long-range bombers,at present no IAF aircraft can launch bombing mission on Chinese mainland, all are short legged when comes to range.

One man's meat is another man's poison. This idiom fits adequately, when India intends to buy the Tu-22M3 which suffered widespread maintenance issues during its service with the Soviet forces. This Soviet era Tu-22M3 has (engine & airframe) low service life.

But these swept wings Tupolev family Maritime strike bombers will come with Raduga Kh-22 long range (600 KM) ASM, (thanx to India's recent MTCR entry) whose goal is to cripple aircraft carriers, owing to its blistering speed of 4.6 in Mach numbers.

India has still not forgotten USS ENTERPRISE (7th fleet) entry into India during Nixon years of 1971 (Indian Pakistan war)

So yes. It has certain role to play in this regard on the positive side.

that will be done by the 5th GEN MRCA and we have missiles to reach out to every part of China from direct borders....!...Russia and US developed the strategic bombers because of the distance they had between them....furthermore, American strategic bombers are exclusives, they are damn expensive costing over a billion dollar each and have good amount of stealth and speed....Russian strategic bombers are easily detectable and can be shot down easily in this generation! ..in future we would need attack drones that can travel across the globe at a speed we cant think right now..may be a 6th or 7th gen fighter jet!

This is a good move on India's part as China has embarked on the development of its sealth strategic bomber the H-20.

It is always good to see India buying this and that from every corner of the world. :D
