The state-run All India Radio (AIR) has told the BBC that it does not have any recordings of the 1947 speech by Pakistan's founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

Pakistan's state-run broadcaster asked AIR for the historic speech in which Jinnah had said people could follow any religion without state interference.

Jinnah had addressed the Constituent Assembly on 11 August 1947, three days before the creation of Pakistan.

Pakistani officials said they had first contacted the BBC for the speech.

Murtaza Solangi, the director general of Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation, told Press Trust of India that the British broadcaster was unable to locate it in its extensive archives.

"I had received a call from Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation asking for a recording done on a certain date, but we don't have the tape with us," AIR director general LD Mandloi told the BBC.

"We will inform the Prasar Bharati [Indian government broadcasting authority] and it is up to them to take it forward and inform Pakistan," he said.

Earlier, Mr Solangi had told PTI: "This [Jinnah] speech is very important for people who want to direct the country [Pakistan] to the goal of a modern, pluralistic, democratic state."

In the speech, Jinnah is reported to have said: "You are free; you are free to go to your temples, you are free to go to your mosques or to any other place of worship in this state of Pakistan.

"You may belong to any religion or caste or creed, that has nothing to do with the business of the state."

Mr Solangi says in 1947, radio stations in what is now Pakistan did not have proper recording facilities and hence they do not have a copy of the historic speech.

Wonder if this is the reason why it was not found or ' lost' by Radio Pakistan ?

. .
Was that historic speech post independence or pre independence and where is the place of occurrance ?

. .
Oh cm'on , it is very well documented ! Even though the missing of the speech is quite unfortunate , doesn't change the fact that Quaid said it ...

Obviously you didnt read the article - Pakistan couldnt have "found" or "lost" something - they NEVER had a copy.....

For Think Tanks it would be a good idea to follow threads on this forum.

This subject has been dealt with on a thread that began two days ago by a Pakistani poster.

I am reproducing excerpts from post No 1 of that thread. I had read it , hence my comments on post #2.

I hope it helps.

"The speech, made in Karachi in 1947, set out Jinnah's vision for a democratic, tolerant and well-governed democracy, but was largely ignored by his successors, especially its late dictator General Zia ul Haq, who "Islamicised" the country in the late 1970s.

Recordings of the speech were made and kept by the Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation but were later destroyed.

Now the Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation's director has appealed to his Indian counterpart at All-India Radio for a copy of one of the last surviving tape recordings."

Pkaistan has not his speech, India has not his speech ...

Conclusion: He never said Pakistan will secular, instead Pakistan will be Islamic state... Case closed.. :P

Shame it could not be found wonder where it could be lost? why was it not preserved could it be like Gandhi's items some of which found it's way to private collectors in the west?

. .
What really matter is whats the opinion of majority of people think about the issue ..great person have said many great things but people have to follow those .. If pakistan is ready to introspection and want to make fundamental changes then these will help to create national concession ..otherwise it is just another speech

I apologise in advance but I never understood this natak.

You are free to go here or there, pray to this or that, etc. etc.

But first we must have a separate nation for Muslims because Muslims and Hindus are different and cannot live with one another.

Then free kahe ka bhai.

If anything, Zia and his ilk took this half baked theory to its natural conclusion.
