India, Russia may build supercomputer to rival China's Tianhe-2

Both India and Russia have the funds and talent to go it alone.
If tiny Switzerland can develop a supercomputer, then surely Russia and India can.

Switzerland is a rich country the living standards there and the salary wage is probably the highest going but if you consider India's military budget which is around $45 bn and Russia's which is slightly higher at $58bn both these figures is not equal to what China spends both official and hidden. India is good in software and Russia is quite good in hardware side. Russia offered the Glonass system only to India and in my view I feel they trust us more compared to China when it comes to defence as we will not clone their tech like they did with the su-27.

China is competing with the USA now not India they have lapped us multiple times but our military approach is a asymmetric warfare similar to Pakistan's approach with India, we can not compete in terms of numbers but we can still pack a punch to deter any incursion into our borders.

Per-capita is not relevant here. Countries don't develop a supercomputer for every citizen.

Only one supercomputer need be developed and India's total GDP is enough to provide funding for one.

Let's focus on computing and leave military out of it.

Supercomputers are used for military purpose too, anything from missile design to nuclear technology. Yes you can build a supercomputer many countries have but the purpose of this deal if it were to happen is to build one of the fastest machines using both the brain powers of India and Russia and sharing the cost and the expertise. China is going it alone just like the USA it is going to be the next superpower of the world but for India we need to work with our partners and there is no greater partner we have than Russia.

Five years is a life time in computing. India WAS in the 4-5th place in 2007? That's seven, eight years ago!!!!
What progress has India made since then???? NOT MUCH!!!!!!
Russia is a long con and India is a perfect pigeon.
What can India offer to Russia but $$$$?
Talk about delusional!!!!

Talk about falseflag trolls ...:omghaha:

build your own hardware
LOL the processor your SC uses is of Intel. Which is main source of increasing speed of the processing and even then calling it China's own indigenous and telling others yours isn't indigenous. LOLOLOLOL all you guys have done is cover up the system by making a cabinet for it. LOLOLOL!:rofl::rofl:

The industry standard is Intel chips, everyone uses 3rd party OS, but you need to build your own hardware and configuration.
This is different from adding router on a system built by Hewlett Packard
Make up your own definition of Indigenious. :coffee:

By the time this “pie-in-the-sky” is built(if it ever gets built),China will be past the next iteration of Tianhe-2(for a 100 petaflops machine in 2015)and well on her way to the 1st exascale supercomputer。:D

Peek into China's Plans for Top Supercomputer Shows No Slowdown

The aim is to dislodge China from number 1 spot, any better thing china will come will be defeated by India and Russia is what the title say .... :D

Come up with your best and it will be beaten by this joint effort .... :azn:

Fastest Super Computer !!! Good for China

I think we should focus on our needs than record !!! If current Indian Super computers are meeting our need no need to allot national resources just for record. Planning for future is good though. Private players can do that if they want
absolutely agree with u .... i cant understand whats the fuss abt having fastest super computer...when there are no or few researchers to use it??
if existing facilities are doing the job...why?

@egodoc222 @Sergi C'mon you should know that we Indians never do anything until unless it is urgently required. Why would we waste just because of ranking. There is a need that is why they've decided to build one. Or maybe Russia needs it and so we, by helping them and contributing equally can get the same which will not get obsolete/outdated for much longer time and might work as a reserve for future. :enjoy:

guys wat i meant was hw many of the existing supercomputers are available for uni students for research???
may be @Srinivas could answer...
if these not available for students???
wat the use???
im not against this initiative taken....but doing this only to fight for that top spot mere waste of money...
it would be much better if they could use that money to build smaller supercomputer with universities distributed all over india...make available the computing power to all aspiring students promote research....than mere showing off!!!

ps: yeah im full of ego!!! :)

Guess what, few days ago i came to know that BSNL is setting up new Supercomputing System in Chandigarh. BSNL's whole Controlling system is located in Chandigarh.
