India pulls out of hockey event in Pakistan on security grounds

India has pulled out of the three-nation international hockey tournament in Pakistan after its External Affairs Ministry refused permission on security grounds, forcing the Pakistan Hockey Federation to call off the event.

Malaysia, the third team in the tournament proposed to be held in Lahore from April 9 to 13, had withdrawn two days back.

PHF secretary Asif Bajwa told a press conference in Lahore that the Indian hockey authorities informed that their foreign ministry had advised them not to send the team to Pakistan due to security concerns.

"It's with deep regret we have to announce that India has said it can't send its team for the competition," Bajwa said.

"We had completed all arrangements and were expecting a final nod from the Indian Hockey Federation regarding the travel plan of their side but to our surprise they informed us that their government had not granted permission for the team to visit Pakistan due to security reasons," he said.

"The Indian foreign ministry feels security situation in Pakistan are not ideal for international hockey, that is why India is not coming," he added.

Hockey India, however, said in a statement in New Delhi that it was keen to take part in the tournament but had been advised by the External Affairs Ministry not to travel to Pakistan "unless backed by credible high level assurances of security from Pakistan side".

"Ministry of External Affairs has sent a communication dated 3 April 2012 conveying that in view of the security situation prevailing in Pakistan, the visit of the Indian Hockey team would not be advisable unless backed by credible high level assurances of security from the Pakistan side," the HI statement said.

It's not a question about security, but about politics dominating the sport. Lahore, where the games were supposed to be held, has been more peaceful as compared to New Delhi & Mumbai in terms of terrorist attacks in the last year & so.

Even if I give your logic the benefit of doubt, that still fails to explain the pull out of the Malaysians.

...and mind you, the Malaysians pulled out earlier than the Indians did.

and BTW, was it not Lahore where the Lankans had that nightmare of a cricket match?

and you know how two dys back a certain Hafiz Saeed made the Islamabad police dance to his tunes and ultimately ended up conducting a rally right in front of the Pakistani parliament.

You can refer to that thread if you want to.

...I pointed this out even in that thread...

...who will take such joke of a police seriously?

Pakistanis and Pakistani police need to set a few records straight before international sportsmen start taking their assurances seriously.

Not entirely true, maybe a little. If it was not a question of security, why are non-Indian teams reluctant to tour Pakistan? The situation was not very promising even before the attack on Sri Lankan cricketers, and it has made it only worse. Besides, the Indian government and BCCI don't have clout over countries like Australia or England to ask them not to tour Pakistan. People can't keep blaming India for all the ills in the neighborhood.

That was in 2009, it's been 3 years since, & Lahore has been more peaceful than New Delhi & Mumbai in the last 2 years.

It is unfortunate that politics has crept up into sport. It is not about India.

If you wanna go round and round in circles without fully comprehending my article, without paying attention to the fact that Malaysians pulled out even earlier than the Indians did, then you can go on. I know for a fact that you have a habit of ducking the hard questions and diverting threads.

...I'm sorry, I do not post to increase my post count.

We'll talk when you have something substantial to refute my post with.

When you have groups like JUD and LEJ and the countless others roaming around Lahore things are not safe. Heck you even released the culprit behind the Sri Lankan attack.

What part of my post did you not understand?

Because Pakistan is being portrayed poorly in the international media, politics has entered into sport. A similar situation exists in Iran, do you see any international tournaments being held there, even though it is safer from a security POV than India?

WTF!

They did?

WoW!

I didn't know that.

Your post is perfectly indicative of how international politics dominates sport. Instead of looking at the hard statistical evidence that shows Lahore has been safer than New Delhi & Mumbai in the last year & so, you choose rhetoric & baseless political assumptions (politics should have nothing to do with sports) to make a point.

Look. You don't understand, or may be you don't want to, whatever, that there is a difference between a country being unsafe and a police being unreliable.

This is more a case of Pakistani police being unreliable than a case of Pakistan being unsafe. I'me not even discussing Pakistan's 'safety index' yet. Let's stick to the Pakistani police for the time being.

Like I said, Pakistanis and their police are not helping the cause when a certain Hafiz Saeed can manage to show the middle finger to the entire police of your capital city and conduct a rally right in front of your parliament...this when there is an order proscribing him from doing so.

Now cross your heart and tell me, will you bet your life on the assurances of such incompetent policemen and their assurances?

Let alone the Indians, even the Malaysians won't...

That's one big LOL at the Pakistani Judicial system.

hahahaha, look who laughs at our judicial system, why is narinder modi hanging out freely after master minding butchering of scores of inncent muslims, and now being hailed as guy who is now being encouraged for PM seat?

I'm not laughing, my man. I really am not. It is something to be pitied, not laughed at.

It's your judicial system which is laughing at your judicial system.

...and let's not bring Modi on a thread where he'll be least relevant, shall we?

I doubt Malaysia or India know too much about Pakistani police, or have even done research on them.

Like it or not, international politics has a definite bearing, & has dominated sports. Case in point being Zimbabwe, which was peaceful, but cricket teams refused to tour the country as the 'black supremist dictator' Mugabe was in power. Sports have always had a political dimension to them.
