India does a whole lot more for certain ethnic militants sneaking into Pakistan's western borders. Maybe things heating up on LoC are as a result of tit for tat.

Srinagar: An Army jawan was killed on Monday as Pakistani troops opened fire on Indian positions in Nowgam sector, Kupwara district near the Line of Control (LoC) Jammu and Kashmir, Army sources said.

Sources said Indian troops came under heavy fire from the across the LoC at around 15:30 hrs IST at Khayan in Nowgam sector.

One Army jawan from 22 Rajput battalion has been killed. Sources added that Indian troops retailated with small arms fire.

According to sources, 15 Pakistani soldiers entered into the LoC in Kaiyan Bull in Nowgam. They approached the Forward Observation Post of the Indian Army and told them to vacate the post. Then they shot at one on the Indian sepoys on the post who fell down into the ravine.

India has asked for a flag meeting and ceasefire so as to recover the body of the dead sepoy.

NEW DELHI, July 28 (AFP) - A group of Pakistani troops crossed into occupied Kashmir Monday and shot dead an Indian soldier, sparking a gun battle, an army spokesman in New Delhi said. “Between 10 and 12 Pakistani soldiers crossed the Line of Control and entered the Kupwara sector, and after a verbal duel they shot dead a soldier,” Indian army spokesman Anil Kumar Mathur told AFP. He said the killing triggered an exchange of small arms fire, which was continuing into the evening. According to the spokesman, Pakistani soldiers crossed 200 metres ) into Indian territory to “object to the setting up of a post by Indian army soldiers.” The infiltration took place at 3:00 pm (0930 GMT), an Indian army statement said. “After that our troops also retaliated and the Pakistani troops withdrew. We don't know yet whether Pakistani troops suffered any casualties. The exchange of fire is continuing in the area,” the army statement added. In Islamabad, Pakistani army's spokesman said he had no information on the clash. “I don't have any information about this incident right now,” chief Pakistani military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas told AFP.

SRINAGAR, India — India said Monday that Pakistani troops crossed into its part of the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir and opened fire. Indian troops returned fire, and at least four soldiers were killed.

Indian army spokesman Brig. Gopala Krishnan Murali called the attack a "brazen violation of cease-fire."

One Indian soldier died and "three or four" Pakistani soldiers were killed in "retaliatory fire" in the Kupwara area of the region, Murali said.

Murali said that the body of one Pakistani soldier was still lying on the Indian side of the frontier and intermittent firing between troops continued.

There was no immediate comment from Pakistani officials.

The region has been the focus of two of the countries' three wars, since they were created in the bloody partition of the Indian subcontinent at independence from Britain in 1947, although the frontier had been largely quiet since a truce was declared in late 2003.

But cross-border shootings in the last few months have led to a familiar round of accusations, with each side blaming the other for violating the cease-fire and New Delhi accusing Islamabad of helping Islamic rebels sneak into its part of Kashmir.

Nearly a dozen Islamic rebel groups have been fighting since 1989 for Kashmir's independence from India or its merger with Pakistan. More than 68,000 people, most of them civilians, have been killed in the conflict, and India routinely accuses Pakistan of assisting the insurgents, a charge Islamabad denies.

It's unfortunate but one is left with little choice but to maintain a degree of a suspicion and skepticism of these Indian reports - these reports and others emanating from other hostile quarters while a high level meeting is taking place is suggestive of attempts to influence events and perceptions.

It speaks of a close cooperation’s between media outlets and state agencies, in particular a role for the Indian media in Indian psyops

Given the time proximity to the recent blasts in India, psyops cannot be ruled out.

The Indian story does sound a bit fantastic though - Pakistani troops allegedly confronted Indian troops 200 meters in Indian territory, altercation ensued, Pakistanis point blank shoot one Indian soldier, and then just manage to run away.

I suppose if it is true then we should be glad about what that says about Indian marksmanship!

Firing continues across LoC, flag meet convened

NEW DELHI: After a blatant violation of ceasefire along the LoC, firing continues across the Line of Control (LoC). This is the sixth ceasefire violation that has taken place at the LoC in the past three weeks. ( Watch )

On Monday afternoon, 10 to 15 Pakistani soldiers crossed the LoC in Kaiyan Bowl at Nowgam sector in Baramulla district and threatened an Indian surveillance detachment of five soldiers, keeping a watch in the area, at around 3.30 pm. ( Watch )

The Pakistani soldiers had demanded that the Indian observation post be vacated. An Army jawan, Mahesh, belonging to 22 Rajput battalion got killed in the exchange of fire. His body has been recovered now.

Indian troops came under heavy fire from across the LoC, when a patrol was moving from one observation post to another.

Following the incident both India and Pakistan have convened a flag meeting to sort out the ceasefire violation issue.

Pakistan is said to have suffered three to four casualties and the body of a Pakistani soldier is lying on the Indian side.

Similar incidents have been reported from Bimbergalli, Gurez, Mendhar, Tangdhar and other sectors in the last two-three months, indicating that Pakistan army could well be back to its old strategy of providing "covering fire" to militants.

On July 17, there were three violations in just one day. The first happened in Chakwali when Pakistani troops fired two rounds in the air. Later in the day, a jawan was critically injured after unprovoked fire on the Pona post in Mendhar.

The third violation happened when the Pakistani army fired 40 rounds on Peer Post in Rajouri.

On July 11, despite firing from the Pakistani side in Kishna-ghati area in Poonch, Indian troops did not retaliate.

About the timing, you are entitled to have your own view while we can have ours.
