Apartheid is based on race and racial purity. China has no such system. In the 1990s anyone could have gained residency in Shanghai. Buy a $50,000 apartment. Today that apartment is worth $1 million++. Smart people making money is called capitalism.

The Word Apartheid for Hukou system is not my invention but what I found the people finding similarities between apartheid and Hukou. Have a look on these articles.

I think it's hilarious to call the hukou an apartheid. In an apartehid there is zero escape of it, because it's base on biology like a caste system. The stigma is always attache to you, even your family name tells that you are untouchable. Hundred millions of rural Chinese managed to become urban citizens and nobody knows or cares where their family once came from.

Caling the hukou an apartehid is an insult to the apartheid victims in South Africa and the segragation victims in the US. I have yet to see a sign in China where migrants are not allowed to sit in the front of the bus, or a bench reserved for city dwellers or a restaurant not serving to migrant or a beach/park reserved for Shanghai/Beijing/Guangzhou residents.

No, I don't know which road leads from the Mumbai airport to Dharavi, neither do I know which road leads from the Shanghai Pudong Airport to the city. The taxi driver knows it.

nobody really cares about Hukou now,Beijing now is almost empty,people are going back to their hometowns to celebrate Chinese new year,Beijing as a megacity has way more people from outside Beijing than those native to Beijing,I m Beijing native and feel like a rare species in Beijing overwhelmed by people from everywhere of China.Hokou is just a concept that has no real power now.

I did say that it's unfair, but there are many ways to get out of it as proven by hundred millions of new urban Chinese. the upward movement is open to anyone in China. The easiest is through education. So the word apartheid is an insult to the apartheid victims as they never had the chance to get out of it just like people from lower cast.

As China is becoming more and more an urban society, the hukou will become obsolete by natural development.

Instead of taking shots at Chinese development and associated problems, Indians should seriously reflect on the country's shortcomings and heed solid advice and information.

Chinese on this forum should not belittle India cause we were poor not too long ago. Humility is a core Chinese virtue.
