They died. Thats not the same as slapping a thief.
Villagers killing thieves is a net negative for the system, not positive. This worsens law and order, does not improve it.
Just a thrashing and nobody would have said anything. They died means it was more than a thrashing. Actions have consequences. Murdering someone under any reason is a crime. My uncle looted my dads crores and the law failed us. If i kill my uncle i am still a murderer.
