Police in India say two Muslim men have been lynched, allegedly by a mob, which accused them of trying to steal cows for slaughter.

The killings in the north-eastern state of Assam are the latest in a series of attacks blamed on hardline Hindu groups in recent months.

Hindus consider cows sacred and killing them is illegal in several states.

A Human Rights Watch report last week said at least 10 Muslims, have been killed over the issue since May 2015.

The victims of Sunday's attack in Assam's Nagaon district have been identified as Abu Hanifa and Riyazuddin Ali, police said.

"They were chased and beaten with sticks by villagers who said the two men were trying to steal cows from their grazing field," news agency AFP quoted senior police official Debaraj Upadhyay as saying.

"By the time we took them to the hospital at night they had succumbed to their injuries," he added.

A murder case has been registered and two people have been detained for questioning, police said.

The Human Rights Watch report says that since the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party formed India's federal government in 2014, attacks against Muslims and Dalits have risen over rumours that they sold, bought, or killed cows for beef.

Those killed in the violent vigilante campaign against beef consumption include a 12-year-old boy.

Many states are now actively enforcing bans on cow slaughter and in March, the western state of Gujarat passed a law making the slaughter of cows punishable with life imprisonment.

In addition to government bans, several vigilante groups who portray themselves as protectors of cows have also been active in several states.

The groups routinely check vehicles and often beat up cattle traders.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year criticised the vigilantes, saying such people made him "angry", but this has not stopped the attacks against cattle traders.

This is the new normal under Modi. We have read and heard countless stories over the years surfacing from India. Kill, rape and murder without question. These people have the audacity to lecture others about terrorism and human rights. What an utter shame.

Just try to imagine the mindset of people who would kill others on mere suspicion of stealing and eating cow meat. What kind of a mindset would resort to such barbarity.

To make matters worse, we have Indians on this forum who are shamelessly defending murder and rape.

Most indians here support the killings showing how much indian society have been radicalized andn how much extremists have controlled their minds.
This is an act which should have been condemned by every human being. They never stole a cow just like previously the muslim man was not carrying cow meat but was killed.
It isn't something to kill someone but the reason behind killing was more of extremism and religious factors rather than any crime like stealing.
Hope justice is done but don't think it will be done.

No one is justifying the killing, no one can. Its horrible, loss of life. What we (at least I can speak of myself) are trying to say is - this does not look religion inspired (unlike other incidents involving cow vigilantes).

@Divergent1 lynching of thieves (suspected or otherwise) used to be much more common in interiors / backward / undergoverned places in India like bihar assam etc. With better communication, better policing and more police access this has gone down. Not entirely obviously. Its shameful. Also mob violence is absolutely horrible. I have read quite a bit about mob mentality and violence and the details of what a mob can do is skin crawling.

Lynching of thieves has to stop. Sorry but that is not justice.

Violence of cattle was very common across the globe. Cattle theft often leads to violence. But those were the old days. Villagers must hand over anyone caught stealing anything, including cows.

The perps must be taught the value of rule of law. Nobody has the right to mete out punishments except courts.

Its not the villagers job to catch thieves or even stop crime. Its the police's job.

So as long as the police do not do their job, the public is forced to be vigilantes.

First let the police learn the value of the rule of law, then the criminals THEN we can talk about the vigilantes being punished. I have zero sympathy for them.

They died. Thats not the same as slapping a thief.

Villagers killing thieves is a net negative for the system, not positive. This worsens law and order, does not improve it.

Just a thrashing and nobody would have said anything. They died means it was more than a thrashing. Actions have consequences. Murdering someone under any reason is a crime. My uncle looted my dads crores and the law failed us. If i kill my uncle i am still a murderer.
