India may become the fifth-largest manufacturing nation - from ninth position at present - if the country is able to increase the share of manufacturing in GDP to 25 per cent, a Boston Consultancy Group report has said.

The National Manufacturing Policy envisages that India's manufacturing sector should increase its share of GDP from 15 per cent at present to 25 per cent by 2022, in line with global peers.

It will help India become the fifth-largest manufacturing nation, said the BCG report.

However, despite high potential, the Indian manufacturing sector has not been able to achieve the requisite growth and its share of GDP has remained relatively flat for over two decades because of poor productivity, BCG-CII said in the report titled `People productivity-Key to Indian manufacturing competitiveness'.

An improvement in `people productivity' can be beneficial across all levels of an organisation, it said, adding that it is critical for the Indian manufacturing sector to work toward enhancing people productivity.

It is also important to attract quality talent to the sector, said the report. A survey of placement committees across the top domestic educational institutes suggested that poor job offerings, lack of glamour quotient and lack of awareness concerning potential of manufacturing jobs were some of the reasons behind students' less preference for manufacturing companies, it said.

Apart from brand building, student-connect and awareness activities, in the longer term the manufacturing firms need to work on developing a more conducive working atmosphere, providing better employee experience, and repackaging job offerings to suit students' expectations, it said.

With China's manufacturing competitiveness losing sheen fast, challengers are aggressively vying for a bigger piece of the USD 8.8 trillion1 global manufacturing pie. India, with its large working population and low labour costs (or substantial labour-cost competitiveness) is at a distinct advantage, and can grab a lion's share, the report added.

Plz stop posting all these may be, should be, will be kind of thread, i think it would be much better if we post such threads after we actually achieve all this...:)

BTW i think this Buy Indian Products Policy (from electronics to defence) will definitely have a positive impact on our industry as a whole in the coming decade.

For now we should focus more on infrastructure development n quality education rest all will follow the course...:D

Manufacturing is important because:

1) It requires the nationwide creation of efficient and effective infrastructure, in order to be competitive.

2) It provides mass low-skill employment, which is especially important in countries with large populations.

3) It leads to urbanization, which is an essential stage in development, because it takes people out of a subsistence rural lifestyle and brings them into modernity.

Those are the main points, but also:

4) Manufacturing is a way for low-skilled workers to add large amounts of value to raw materials. In addition, the finished products can also be exported to earn a significant cash flow in the form of trade surpluses, freeing up national finances from budget constraints. Which allows additional investment in infrastructure/education/etc.

These are the reasons why almost all of the current developed countries once went through their own large-scale industrial stage.

The said reports aren't created for you and me or India's 'Image'. It is designed for corporate planning and policy guidance. If BCg has written this reporrt then rest assured, it will have a reflection in all the consulting recommendations on manufacturing to their clients (Read Fortune 500). it is VERY important to look good in these reports- billions of $$ of investments are sent this way or that way basis these.

The 2nd largest populated country in the world not becoming a large manufacturing nation itself is an abnormality. India becoming a large manufacturing country is nothing special or out of the ordinary. :coffee:
