The point is whether or not it is done in a constructive way, or a hateful way. The USA + USSR example you gave was a zero sum game, in which one side was going to fall.

But that was not evident in 70s or 80s when both were going strong. SU did many things that we are careful enough not to do.

I think the Soviet Union was always destined to fall.

Expansionist empires are fueled by conquest. Once the conquest stops, it becomes too expensive to hold everything together.

I don't think the USA, China or India can be compared to the Soviet Union.

I disagree. The Soviet Union never conquered any nation except in self defense the way the US did. In fact, the US is far more expansionist, or do you really think that Japan and South Korea are geographically connected to the US?

Expansionism is bad when you lose. It's great when you win.
