Indias Ministry of Defence and the Indian Air Force submitted a Letter of Request to the United States government, inquiring about a potential acquisition of 10 C-17 Globemaster III advanced airlifters. Boeing Co. (BA: 62.20 0.00%) recently completed a series of C-17 demonstration flights in India, as the nation has been interested in replacing its current fleet of airlifters (Russian AN-32 and IL-76 aircraft). The deal is potentially worth billions of dollars.
The C-17 Globemaster III is a high-wing, four-engine, T-tailed military transport. The Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is capable of rapid strategic delivery of troops and cargo to main operating bases, or directly to forward bases in the deployment area. Theaircraft is also able to perform tactical airlift and airdrop missions when required. The inherent flexibility and performance characteristics of the C-17 force improves the ability of the total airlift system to fulfill the worldwide air mobility requirements of the United States.
