The Indian security forces have killed two fighters believed to be linked to the pro-independence movement in Kashmir in a fire exchange in the disputed region.
The Indian soldiers were cordoning off the northern village of Thagund in Baramulla district when the gun battle erupted, said Indian army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Nitin N. Joshi on Saturday.
The fighters started the clashes by opening fire on the Indian forces in an attempt to escape the barricade, the Indian military official claimed.
The incident came a week after a Pakistani civilian lost his life during an exchange of fire between Indian and Pakistani troops in Kashmir.
The Pakistani military said in a statement that 60-year-old Muhammad Aslam took three bullets in abdomen as Indian troops opened fire in the disputed Kashmir region, prompting the Pakistani soldiers to retaliate with fire.
Kashmir lies at the heart of more than 66 years of animosity between India and Pakistan. Both neighbors claim the region in full but have partial control over it.
Over the past 25 years, people in Kashmir have been engaged in pro-independence battles with the Indian government. New Delhi’s crackdown on the protests has left tens of thousands dead in the Muslim-dominated region.
Islamabad and New Delhi have fought three wars, two of which over Kashmir, since their independence from the British colonial rule in 1947.
