India emerging as an export hub for SUVs
Mahindra XUV 500
Tata Safari
India-made SUVs are soon set to burn rubber in developed markets in Europe, Japan, Latin America and Australia with global auto majors looking at leveraging cost competitive manufacturing practices in the country to develop it as an export hub for utility vehicles.
While homegrown auto major Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) and French car maker Renault have already commenced exports of the XUV500 and Duster to Europe in December last year, Fiat and Ford India too are assessing opportunities to export sports utility vehicles to markets in Europe, South Africa and Southeast Asia.
Joginder Singh, president and managing director, Ford India, said, The European equation works well with the EcoSport. We already export the Figo to 38 countries globally from India, and would look at a similar scale for the SUV. While Singh declined to specify the proportion of production of the EcoSport which Ford India has earmarked for exports, industry sources indicated that over 40% of scheduled annual production of 150,000 units is being planned for sales in overseas markets. Overall, around 380 variants of the SUV - locally manufactured at Fords Maraimalainagar facility - will be shipped to 40 countries across the world.
Italian car maker Fiat too, which is looking at launching nine new models in the Indian market by 2016, is firming up plans to export some of these products out of India to right-hand drive markets overseas.
