Ratan Tata hands over first three Nano cars to customers

MUMBAI: A gleaming lunar silver-coloured Nano was handed over to a proud owner here on Friday to mark the commercial rollout of the jellybean-shaped Ratan Tata presents the key of first Nano car to its owner in Mumbai.

Chairman of the Tata group, Ratan Tata, who had promised to deliver what he has been calling the ‘people's car’ at just Rs100,000 at factory gates, himself handed over the car keys to Ashok Vichare.

He also gave away the keys of the second, sunshine yellow Nano to Ashish Balakrishnan, while the third went to the Indian arm of Corus India -- the Anglo-Dutch steel maker that was acquired by the Tatas two years ago.

"There are three things in life which one cherishes -- to own a house, buy a car and start a family. For me, the second dream is coming through," Balakrishnan said. "I now hope I can now settle down with a family soon."

Vichare chose to drive the car straight to the Siddhi Vinayak Mandir, a temple dedicated to the elephant god, which is popular among celebrities and the average residents alike.

Kerela(Kochi) is going to have Longest railway bridge in India

Kochi, Jul 18 (PTI) Come November and people in Kochi can take pride in their city having the longest railway bridge in the country, cutting across an island over the Vembanad lake. The 4.62 km-long Vallarpadam bridge will beat the current record for the longest rail bridge held by the Nehru Setu Bridge near Dehri on river Sone in Bihar by more than a kilometre.

"It will be the longest bridge built in the shortest possible time of 18 months," G Kesava Chandran, Deputy General Manager, Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. (RVNL), which is executing the works, told PTI. The basic idea behind building this huge elevated structure, being completely funded by the Centre, was to reduce land acquisition at nearby Vaduthala, which is a very thickly populated area, he said.

The bridge is part of the nearly nine km railway link being built for Vallarpadam International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT). The total cost of the Rail link for the Vallarpadam project, including the railway station and goods yard at Edappally near here was Rs 245.67 crore, but had shot up to Rs 297.10 crore due to escalation of steel prices, he said.

Chandran said 11,000 tonnes of ordinary steel, 3,000 tonnes of high tensile steel and 36,000 tonnes of cement have so far been consumed to build the 133 span bridge, which will have 133 pillars. These pillars are built on piles sunk to depths ranging between 45 to 55 metres, he said.

Greenest Building in Delhi

Druk White Lotus School, Ladakh​


Barely 15 km southeast of Leh, the hilly headquarters of Ladakh district in Jammu and Kashmir, lies one of India’s most innovative “green” schools that operates on solar power and draws on natural elements to provide “sustainable education” to poor children.

The school, a seat of education that blends the traditional Ladakhi culture, Buddhist philosophy and modern learning modules, is the winner of three World Architecture Awards - for the best “Asian Building”, the best “Green Building” and the best “Education Building”.

Last week, the school won the prestigious British Council for School Environment award for the most “Inspiring Design”.


The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad - First Green Airport of Asia​












The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad has been awarded the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design New Construction (LEED NC) Silver Rating by US Green Building Council (USGBC). It is the first airport in Asia to be awarded the LEED certification.

India's development sometimes seen as skewed towards urban areas or So called Big Cities. But there is a simultaneours effort going on all around towards creating and improving Infrastructure and services all over the country.

To begin with :

Road Infrastructure:

The Golden Quadrilateral is a highway network in India connecting Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai, thus forming a quadrilateral of sorts. The largest highway project in India, initiated by Atal Bihari Vajpayee, it is the first phase of the National Highways Development Project (NHDP), and consists of building 5,846 kilometres of four/six lane express highways at a cost of Rs. 60,000 crores (US$ 12.317 billion at 1999 prices). As of 2008, while the Golden Quadrilateral makes up under 2 percent of India's highway network, it carries about 40% of the country's traffic and accounts for one-third of its traffic fatalities.[1]
The vast majority of the Golden Quadrilateral is not access controlled, although safety features such as guardrails, shoulders, and high-visibility signs are used. The National Highways Authority of India has produced statistics to indicate that, as of September 2007, 96% of the entire work has been completed. However, these statistics appear to be misleading: in practice, roadworks are still a major feature of certain sections of the Golden Quadrilateral. For example, the statistics indicate that the Delhi to Mumbai section is 100% complete, whereas in reality there are a number of sections which are still single carriageway and in very poor repair (for example the stretch to Ahmedabad in Gujarat[citation needed]). The whole project is a few years behind schedule, due mainly to issues with the various states about giving up land for the national highway and the termination of several contracts which take 6 months to be issued. In January, 2008 it was announced that the project will now be expanded to cover 6,500 kilometers, some portions of which will be developed into eight lanes.

Well tell this thing to 27.5% of the people of your country who are below poverty line. Who are born on footpaths, are married on foot paths and die on footpaths. After hearing this statement I am sure you will get a slap or boot from them.

absolutely brilliant thread....i knew india was developing ..but this is way beyond what i had in my mind... really proud now...can my pakistani friends have start a thread with developments in pakistan too please..it would be a relief from the arguments for a while...
