The GoI wants construction certain sections of Phase 4 of the Delhi Metro to begin before phase 3 is even finished:

Unwilling to wait till Delhi Metro’s Phase-III is completed, the Centre wants construction work on “some sections” of the Phase-IV project to start immediately once the detailed project report is completed.

Addressing the valedictory session of the 5th Urban Mobility Conference 2012, he said the detailed project report of the Phase-IV of Delhi Metro will be completed soon and that the ministry intends to start work on “some sections”.

“Not completely, but we would start work on some sections through which we can connect the existing Phase I and II and also the Phase-III which is being built. When Phase-IV is fully completed, Delhi will have 440 km of metro network which will be bigger than the London underground,” he said.

The minister also batted for monorail saying it will function as a “good feeder to unviable metro projects” by supplementing Metro in certain routes.

He also talked about delegation of more powers to state government in Metro construction and building up of human capacity to run such systems in the country.

The Delhi Metro is feat in itself.I mean not only in India but the whole world!
The first metro started in 2002 and after that at breakneck construction speed they build several hundred kilometer.
The metro line is real hard to make, either the metro goes several meters underground or it goes on elevated tracks. It needs a whole lot of work!

All thanks to E. Sreedharan he created an ideal for all the government projects to follow.

New chapter for Indian cinema as multi-screens open

For many Indians going to the cinema is not just a pastime, it is a passion.

Recently multi-screen cinemas have sprung up in large numbers and have become a critical component of India's film industry.
Sameer Hashmi reports on how the rapid growth of multiplexes has impacted the financial dynamics of the movie business.

Wake-up; these days lots of govt. projects get done early because of incentives from 'above'.
(Read Japan, US, EU & Global funding agencies). Japan funded Delhi Metro is a prime example.

Sir, I wasn't trolling I was joking! Don't be so touchy! I am glad things are being delivered quickly- very glad in fact! I'd have thought you'd note my past post on this thread before you label me a troll.

Well eff them. India is a democracy, once the people in WB see that the rest of the country is moving ahead it is not going to take long before the idiots at a top pull their fingers out and do what is nessercary for their constituents.

After proposing that Kurla LTT be developed, some Central Railway officials suggest Parel terminus, as it provides good connectivity from east to west

UNABLE to convince the UNESCO of its renovation plans for the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), railway officials are now considering Parel and LTT railway stations to be converted into world- class railway stations.

The reason for the shift to the other two stations is owing to the heritage tag attached to the 125- year- old CST. Authorities say that their multicrore facelift for the structure can’t be passed owing to the stringent heritage rules of UNESCO, which state that no brick or stone can be moved from a heritage structure without prior consent.

In September this year, the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), the advisory body to UNESCO World Heritage Committee, rejected the Railways’ proposal for rationalisation of boundaries.

Hence, authorities started to look at Parel and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) stations.

Initially, LTT had received the nod to be made into a worldclass station. However, internally, the Central Railway (CR) officials began debating if Parel station should also be converted into a world- class station. “ Earlier, it had been proposed to develop Parel as a suburban terminus for which all necessary work will start soon. Now, we have realised there is a scope of converting it into a world- class station owing to the possibilities of more space,” said a CR official.

Presently, there is a huge railway workshop and a few residential colonies housing railway employees near the station.

Officials in favour of converting Parel into a worldclass station want these to be relocated so that more land could be acquired to build an even larger station.

“ Parel offers good east- west connectivity as it is close to Dr Ambedkar Road on the east and NM Joshi Marg on the west, which will allow easy distribution of commuters. This would, in turn, reduce the number of passengers at Dadar station as well,” said another CR official.

As per the current proposal, the Parel terminus will be constructed at a cost of around Rs 800 crore, wherein additional two lines will be laid between CST- Kurla, a terminus building and elevated booking deck will be built. They claim to add nearly 100 more services and the terminus is to be ready by 2015.

Meanwhile, other officials argue that Kurla LTT would be perfect for the development of a world- class station as it would solve the connectivity problem as soon as the the Santacruz Chembur Link Road (SCLR) is ready for use. “ Once SCLR is ready then Kurla terminus will be easily accessible to people residing in both the eastern and western suburbs.

Also it will allow us to add more trains and platforms, which is expected out of a world- class station,” said a senior CR official.

CR officials also plan to develop 20 acres of land at LTT for commercial exploitation to generate funds. The plan includes constructing a multilevel car parking, hotels, commercial establishments and escalators.

They will also construct an elevated deck at LTT and a skywalk to connect Kurla station from LTT.

It's pretty absurd an outside agency (UNESCO) is dicating to Indian authorities how it modernises its own infrastructure!
