I think it has more to do with your policy makers to not push enough for domestic products. Assuming that a country that can send rockets into space cannot make their own rifle indicates a problem at policy level. Granted that Indian products won't match European or American products for foreseeable future however domestic products will end your dependence on any other country. Just my two cents.

It's the Indian numerical system developed within the region. It has gone to Arabs and came back refined.
