India Calls for End to US Embargo Against Cuba

India today called for an immediate end to the nearly half-century old US embargo against Cuba, saying it has undermined development of the country and affected the economic prosperity of the Cuban people.

"On the one hand we, the global community, make tall promises on Millennium Development Goals, of striving for human dignity and achieving equitable growth, but when it comes to action, we do the exact opposite," Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahamed said in the UN.

He said India supports the resolution moved by Cuba and joins other nations in calling for an immediate end to the economic, commercial and financial embargo against Havana.

Terming as "unfortunate" the continued US embargo on Cuba, Ahamed said India sees this as a "violation of the world opinion, and an act that severely undermines multilateralism and the credibility of the United Nations itself."

The UN General Assembly also renewed its call for the 20th consecutive year for an end to the embargo.

In a resolution adopted by 186 votes in favour to two against (Israel and the US), the Assembly reiterated its call to all States to refrain from applying laws and measures not conforming with their obligations to reaffirm freedom of trade.

Introducing the text, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla said the US has never hidden the fact that the objective of the embargo which he said has caused more than USD 975 billion in damage to the Cuban people is to overthrow his country's government.

Has the Indian establishment collectively lost their minds? Now it almost seems like we are deliberately looking to p*ss the Yanks off.Keep focus at India's strategic ambitions before bleeding for others.

Let the United States and Cuba worry about breaking the trade impasse between themselves.

Buddy this is not a bilateral matter between the US and Cuba anymore. India's observations were on a UNGA resolution moved by Cuba in which only Israel and the US voted against the motion and the motion was passed by 186/2 votes. India's stand is correct. We have never supported the American efforts to effect regime change in Cuba by repeated attempts of CIA to assassinate Fidel Castro and an economic blockade which has gone on for more than 2 decades.

India's posture might be morally right but what are India's stakes in the entire matter? We have abstained from voting on sensitive diplomatic hassles that do not concern us,we very well could have done it again. The trick is not end up on the losing side and not butt in where your presence isn't appreciated in the first place.

believe it or not, it's one voting bloc in an extremly important state ( florida) for presidential elections that holds the key to continued ban on cuba. Majority of americans are for an end to the embrago. Its cuban americans that can sway elections that are holding it up. republicans play up on that sensitivity every election...

 Sonia Gandhi and her lapdog Munnimohan have totally gone cuckoo! These sickheaded losers are not concerned about anything at home and are talking about Cuba! Can't somebody just deal with these wretches? Hey CIA do us a favor; get rid of these two (and Madam G's pups). We'll give another MRCA totally to your companies.

your language used about them speaks more about you than your dissenting politics. Speaking up on the world forum is not bad thing. Did the father of nation not speak about ills of british everywhere and injustices in countries like S Africa?

If you want to be a global power, act like one and take a stance on issues. Otherwise be “ local” and be a common power.

He's just venting his frustrations man,If not here then where?

Back on topic,Don't you think that India should be stirring sh*t up with Washington one too many times?Especially when the US is mulling over slapping liability clauses on firms drilling in the Cuban basin(ONGC is one of them). At some point of time, they will start biting back.Phir baith ke rona padega ki USA bhi haath se nikal gaya.

We have enough problems inside the country than the entire Americas combined. I live here. Most Indians here do. We know about it okay? Shouldering responsibilities is fine if your nation is not getting ravaged, not surrounded by unstable enemies, scourge of separatism, issues with resources and blatant corruption etc.

You're the world policeman. You deal with the problems. We're content with our region and want to first rid ourselves of the problems that we face here. Trust me, there is so much of it here that if US was located where India is, it won't last more than a couple of years.

Really...???

CBC News In Depth: Cuba
Trade between Canada and Cuba totals almost $1 billion. About 22 per cent of Cuban exports go to Canada, second only to the Netherlands with about 24 per cent. Canada ranks fifth in exports to Cuba, behind Spain, Venezuela, the U.S. and China.

(A U.S. law passed in October 2000 allowing Cuba to buy U.S. food products, provided Cuba pays cash. Cuba started purchasing food more than a year later after the damage caused by Hurricane Michelle.)
Cuba
The EU is Cuba's largest trading partner, accounting for a third of trade, half of foreign direct investment and more than half of all tourism.
What 'blockade' are you talking about? Are there USN ships stationed around Cuba preventing access?
