India, Boeing haggle over aircraft deal

You get what you pay for. Gorshkov is a perfect example. Yeah, you got it for "free" now see how much it has cost you.

You are right, we shouldn't have expected to get things for free like your Pakistan gets. We get what we pay for, not what we beg for. Difference between our country and yours.

True to their name, Indians are cheapskate.

Who is more of a cheapskate? India which asks for a lower price because it values people's hard earned money and wants the best value for it, or your country that can only afford anything on credit from china or charity from the USA? Who are the bigger cheapskates, you or us?

I don't think the news article represents the facts in correct way. The way government purchases an item from local market is this way.
When a requirement is raised, a price estimate is arrived at, usually by escalating the costs of similar resources based on inflation indices etc. Along with this, specifications are laid and tender floated. Now when tenders are opened, the bids are technically evaluated and only those which meet or exceed specifications are taken up for financial bid opening. Now these days Life cycle costs are calculated & the lowest bidder is asked to come up for price negotiations.
In this case govt had in its wisdom arrived at some estimate and as the case is the lowest bidder (L-1) has a price which is four times the estimate. This doesnot mean that govt is willing to pay fourth of bidders price, its only what is estimated and what is quoted.
Although this system works in number of situations, the problem is in high technology areas where patent costs, legals costs and intellectual property rights are involved, there is no means to arrive at a fixed value close to what can be called realistic figure.
We must also remember that fact that this is the first order won by a US company in an open tender. All other purchases C-130J, C-17, P-8I and possible sale of Howitzers are done through FMS routes where above said procedure was not involved and cost quoted by US govt was taken as final figure.
I hope comments by some members regarding cheapness can be withdrawn.

From our experience in India you have to always take anything Indian shop keepers say with a grain of salt. They must have thought my family and I were stupid and were trying to rip us off royally lol.

Indians know how to haggle, but its all part of business, Indians know how extremely good these helicopters are and trust me they will both meet in the middle where both parties will feel happy with the deal.

Its all part of business, especially when you are dealing in billions of $$$$. And at least India is getting the best of the best and not to mention they are getting original tech, not some crap copies.

LOL, warm welcome to Boeing to the Indian hagggling system, my Grandma told me to always start the haggling bid from 1/4th the quoted price.
And my grandpa told me to jack the price 4 times before quoting the final price! :P Jeeez! You can then even propose giving one Apache free with every 4 you buy! :cheesy:

What does Pakistan have to do with any of these? Why are you losing sleep over Pakistan?

Back to the topic, Indians are known cheapskates. Why do you deny your nature?

Because I'm replying to a Pakistani. It is ironic that a Pakistani accuses us of being cheapskates.

offering 1/4 of the asking price
How South Asian of you

Some times I feel that we are not happy until the seller is giving us money to take his product.

well that comes by blood i guess...as if" bargaining is my birth right" ;)

True to their name, Indians are cheapskate.

and yet ur country is begging us to buy anything and evrything ...from defence to groceries...how true......... :)...

. . .
1/4 th of the quoted price...? Thats the first offer of every Indian ... :D

Indians have the tendency to delude but you take the top prize. Whatever fits your fancy, I don't care. It still doesn't change the fact that Indians are cheapskates. The asking for 1/4 of price is just another example of it.
