India Bans 34 Pakistani & Saudi TV Channels in Kashmir
According to the Indian media on Sunday, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mehboob Mufti, ordered the Deputy Commissioners in Indian-controlled Kashmir to take some measures against 34 Saudi and Pakistani TV channels. This order has come after the Chief Minister looks to control the violence in the valley amidst state-ordered brutality against the Kashmiris.
The ban has been ‘justified’ by the CM over how they ‘contribute towards aggravating violence and the prevailing law and order situation in the disputed region between Pakistan and India.’
The Indian government in Delhi had already issued an order directing the authorities in Kashmir (headed by Mufti) to take swift steps in making sure that the unapproved broadcasting of Pakistani and Saudi Arabian channels in the Indian-held Kashmir was stopped immediately.
An order was issued on Saturday by the Principal Secretary of India’s Home Department, RK Goyal, saying that the ministry has received information of certain cable operators in the region controlled by the Indian government who are “transmitting certain TV channels which are not permitted by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India”.
List of Banned Channels
The channels on the list mostly belong to Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, and they also include Zakir Naik’s Peace TV which has already been banned in India.
The list of 34 channels includes Peace TV Urdu and English, Madni Channel, Hadi Tv, Paigam, Hidayat, ARY QTV, Noor TV, Saudi Al-Sunnah Al- Nabawiyah, Message TV, ARY Zindagi, ARY Digital Asia, Hum Sitaray, Hum TV, Saudi-Al-Quran Al-Karim, Ahli-biat TC, Sehar Karbala TV, ARY Musik, Geo News, ARY News Asia, TV One, ARY Masala, PTV Sports, ARY Zauq, A TV, Abb Tak News, 92 News, Duniya News, Waseb TV, Samaa News, Express News, Geo Tez, and ARY News.
The authorities in Indian-held Kashmir (IHK) some time ago had also barred broadband service providers to restrict access to famous social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Whatsapp.
This kind of measure is the first to be taken by the Indian government although it has earlier and continues to block off all mobile internet signals in this region of the Kashmir Valley.
The measure has also been taken since the region has been tense ever since eight people, of which seven were students, were killed by the Indian police and other paramilitary forces on April 9 when violence erupted during a by-election. State-sanctioned violence against Kashmiris continue to rise as the Indian government resorts to even more and more brutality in the troubled region.

Channel Ban: Cable Operators In A Fix
BYAUQIB JAVEED• MAY 08, 2017
SRINAGAR: - The Union Government’s directive to the state to halt the transmission of 34 TV channels from Muslim countries including Pakistan, Iran and Saudi Arabia in Kashmir Valley has put the cable operators here in a ‘catch 22 situation’ as according to the operators they can neither defy the ban order nor can they afford to stop providing these channels which are highly popular among people in the Kashmir Valley.
Taking to Kashmir Observer, members of the Cable Operators Association said they have decided to defy the order as their business depends mostly on these channels.
When asked about the consequences they will face in case of defiance, they said let authorities seize their equipment and close down their business but they will not stop providing these channels on their own as it will in any case hit their business.
Most of these channels beam programmes about religion, sports and lifestyle and none incites violence,” said Mohammad Amjad President Kashmir Cable Operators Association, adding these channels are very popular among people here.
“We had a meeting with Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar and we categorically told him that we can’t stop broadcasting these channels as it will hit our business badly as people will have no purpose in subscribing to our service then.
Why will one subscribe to our service if we don't give better options than DTH like Dish TV or Tata Sky? we told him.
DC warned us that the authorities will go for seizure and we told him that we are ready for that,” said Khateeb Hussain member of the Association.
The operators are of the view that they will face backlash from public if they block these channels.
“Its common sense we will be labelled as government agents as people will not receive such channels on DTH service allowed in India. Most of them will install their own dish antennas and continue to get these channels. Only result will be loss of livelihood for around two thousand people associated with the cable operations here”, they said.
“I don’t find any logic behind banning these channels. What has entertainment and sports channels to do with radicalisation and inciting violence, said another member of the association.
Channels like ARY Musik broadcasts Sufi Music, ARY Zauq or Ham Masala are cooking channels from Pakistan while Saudi 1 telecasts live feed from Haram Sharif in Makkah 24x7 as does Karbala TV from holy shrine of Imam Hussain in Karbala, said Javed Ahmad Mir, a TV buff.
As already reported the directive to block channels have come from Central government as these channels have no beaming rights by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India.
An order issued by Principal Secretary, Home Department, R K Goyal, to all the deputy magistrates (deputy commissioners) of the state said."It needs being noted that transmission of non-permitted TV channels apart from attracting the violation (of the law), has the potential to encourage or incite violence and create law and order disturbances in the Kashmir Valley.”
The channels on the list mostly belong to Pakistan and Persian Gulf, and they also include Zakir Naik’s Peace TV which has already been banned in India.
The list of 34 channels includes Peace TV Urdu and English, Madni Channel, Hadi TV, Paigam, Hidayat, ARY QTV, Noor TV, Saudi Al-Sunnah Al- Nabawiyah, Message TV, ARY Zindagi, ARY Digital Asia, Hum Sitaray, Hum TV, Saudi-Al-Quran Al-Karim, Ahli-bayt TV, Sehar, Karbala TV, ARY Musik, Geo News, ARY News Asia, TV One, ARY Masala, PTV Sports, ARY Zauq, A TV, Abb Tak News, 92 News, Duniya News, Waseb TV, Samaa News, Express News, Geo Tez, and ARY News.
The ban comes nearly a month after state government blocked Social Media Websites throughout Kashmir Valley following student unrest.

APHC slams Indian govt for banning Pakistani, Saudi TV channels in IHK
The All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) on Tuesday strongly condemned ban on the airing of 34 Pakistani and Saudi TV channels, terming it as a violation of the Kashmiri’s right to freedom of expression. They said that this move was the proof that India was losing control over the Kashmiri people.
The government of Indian-held Kashmir (IHK) has started taking initiative from earlier this week to stop the different channels from being aired because they believe it might incite violence and disrupt the law and order situation in the troubled region.
The channels banned air news, entertainment, food and cuisine, religion and sports programmes.
The APHC in a statement issued in Srinagar said, “It is quite strange to ban those channels which are specifically for Quran and religious programmes. It is a direct interference in religious matters.”
“These steps reflect their future course of targeting the Muslim community and Islam. Its repercussions may perhaps be severe if the decision is not revoked by authorities,” the statement said.
The forum led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq termed the ban as shameful and said, “The real purpose behind all these actions is to isolate the Kashmiri population.”
A spokesman quoting Farooq said, “The authorities do not want the reality of Kashmir to be highlighted internationally. They do not want people of Kashmir to have access to information other than what India filters into Kashmir through its state and corporate run media,” he added.
“The restrictions on social media and TV channels in Kashmir have been imposed by the communal forces of India,” Mirwaiz said, cautioning that such restrictions could further deteriorate the situation in the territory.
The ban has come nearly two weeks after the government imposed an unprecedented ban on 22 social networking sites in IHK on April 26.
