On topic: if japan expresses interest in the project, this might be one of the biggest military co-operation between two nations till date.
@Nihonjin1051 Sir what is Japan's policy on supply of such armaments. Is there any legal/constitutional requirement before both nations enter into some kind of defence agreement?

The Sōryūclass submarines (16SS) are dieselelectric submarines that entered service with the Japan Maritime SelfDefense Force in 2009. The design is an evolution of the Oyashio class submarine, from which it can most easily be distinguished by its Xshaped tail planes. The Sōryūs have the largest displacement of any submarine used by post war Japan.

At 84 m long and 4,200tons submerged, Soryu is significantly larger than the original 11 Oyashioclass boats (81 m and 3,500 tons), in order to incorporate a Kockums Stirling air independent propulsion (AIP) system. With the Kockums Stirling AIP system the submarine doesn't have to surface to charge the batteries and thus increases the submerged endurance from days to weeks. Components for the AIP, which will enhance the vessel's stealth and special operations capability, were supplied by the Swedish company for assembly in Japan.

The Soryus design features higher automation (particularly in combat systems) and computeraided X control planes. The revolutionary X rudder configuration was first developed by Kockums for the Swedich Gotlandclass. The X rudder provides the submarine with extreme manoeuvrability and also enables it to operate very close to the seabed. The Soryu's hull is clad in anechoic coating and the interior features sound isolation of loud components. An anechoic coating has a major effect on the avoidance of detection.

The Soryu was was launched at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' Kobe shipyard on December 2007 and commissioned in March 2009. It was formerly known as the "SS 2,900 ton" and the "16SS" project as it originated in the 16th year of the current Emperor's reign (2003). The cost of the sixth Soryu ( the "Kokuryu") was estimated at 540 US$ million. Japanese submarines since World War II were named after ocean currents. However, the JMSDF changed its naming convention with the Sōryu and submarines will now be named after mythological creatures. Sōryū (そうりゅう) means blue (or green) dragon in Japanese. Why not just build more DCNS Scorpenes with another private shipyard. Common systems will help logistics, training, deployment, refits, maintainence, spares, production time. Single AIP Diesel platforms will eliminate RFP process, oversight committees, TOT process overview, new supply chain. Deploying 14-16 DCNS Scorpene's imo won't be a bad option for IN.

The design bureau is already overloaded with so much project, including INS Vishaal, Future-SSN and SSBN. And yes, they have no room for design a new SSK.

Most probably P-75I would be Scorpene again with DRDO AIP.

Hmmmm. I see. So india has never designed and built an SSK independently?

Yes never. In past India bought the blueprints in 90s from HDW about T-209. And MDL ready to built more, even improved version.

But you know Indian idiotic bureaucracy, they chooses Scorpene. And the whole know how of T-209 got wasted, again now the same thing happening. If we chooses the different submarine other then Scorpene.

And yes, actually India not have any shipyard or even time to wait for indigenous one. The human resource already employed in designing new generation SSBN, SSN and N-Aircraft Carrier.

If we can get technologies from various countries, we can integrate them on one platform and make the final product which is better than the best.

Don't do that, in the last we will get "Khichdi"!!:D

I too hope the same but any idea who owns the L&T? Its head/ceo never seems to retire and their most of directors are above 70 yrs of age. it needs a fresh blood at the helm. I am told govt. owned BHEL is better managed than L&T.

Old or not, Naik is an awesome leader.

If not Russians, then definitely French. There is plan to manufacture a larger Scorpene, with 150MW reactor. If India fail to design SSN, then French already offered to assist in SSN on customizing Barracuda.

ToT and starting construction on Soryu won't begin before 2025 even if deal is signed tommorow.

Scorpene deal has shown how slow and pathetic our domestic shipyards are at starting new projects
