India is finally on her quest to establish friendly ties with Bangladesh with the latest reports from sources suggesting that India may soon win a contract to build a port in Bangladesh. According to reports, Bangladesh cancelled a deep sea port that was to be build by China earlier.
According to the reports by Times of India, the Indian Government has expressed its innate desire to build Bangladesh’s newest deep seaport, Payra. Needless to say, such a move will only go on to strengthen its ties with India.
Meanwhile, Japan has also been bestowed with the contract of developing another deep seaport for Bangladesh. The same will be called “Matarbari”, and shall be located in Cox Bazar.
Although Bangladesh is trying to establish friendly ties with these Asian countries, it has, however, stalled the progress of Sonadia port project. This project, along with Gwader and Hambantota were deemed to be part of China’s much talked about “string of pearls” strategy that was to encircle India.
Although Dhaka’s cancellation of the Sonadia Port project has been shown as the lack of commercial viability, the Japan-developed Matarbari is only 25kms away, and China had done its best to fund the project.
This cancellation of the project is indeed a strategic step by Bangladesh in keeping the Chinese army off the Indian coast. Bangladesh was sufficiently aided by Japan, USA and India.
