Dhaka, Dec 19 (bdnews24.com)—Opposition chief Khaleda Zia on Wednesday urged the independence war veterans to topple the Awami League-led government alleging they were plotting conspiracies to change Bangladesh's map.

"The freedom fighters had freed the country to lead a free life, not to be oppressed by anyone," Khaleda told a programme oraginsed to honour them at the capital's Mahanagar Natya Mancha premises at Gulistan.

"Today they (the government) are plotting to change the map of the country. Scores of Bangladeshis are being killed on the border every day," she added.

The BNP Chairperson also distributed caps and T-shirts among them.

"The government barred the freedom fighters (from taking part in the programme) because they are afraid of them."

"Our movement will not end until the government is forced to leave office," she added.

The former Prime Minister also slated the government for its 'lack of action' over the recent border killings.

"The government could not protest to India when Felani's body was found hanging on the border fence. We freed the country fighting a war, independence did not come from anyone's pity,"
she added.

Felani,15, and her father Nurul Islam Nuru, from Banarbhita village of Nageshwari in Bangladesh, were returning home for her marriage with a local youth on Jan 7, 2011.

Nuru managed to cross the barbed-wire fence on the border with the help of a ladder. But Felani could not as her clothes got entangled in the wire. As she screamed, the BSF soldiers shot her dead and her body was handed over to the BGB personnel the next day.

Khaleda further alleged the Awami League wanted Bangladesh to be oppressed by other countries. "We want friendship on equal terms."

Very direct and pointed message. This directly questions propaganda hype Daily Star and indians generated during her visit to india.

Don't come to our side of the border. Is it that hard for you Bengalis to understand???/ Do you guys have brains???

And pity yeah, you got independence because of a country called India. Pak army could have killed entire population of Bangladesh if they wanted.

.
First time saying what the country wants to hear the most since her return from India. I still believe BNP is not all lost.

ive noticed that in 100% of Bangladeshi election campaigns they keep referring to independence and freedom and oppression

cant they talk about ANYTHING else? Plans for development, plans for economy, foreign policy etc. like they do in most other countries?

your mukti bahinis killed (and raped, and burned homes) of a lot of the same population too actually....just because they were pro-Pakistan or "Islamist" didnt make them worthy of death or bodily harm either just because of their association, right?

I'm referring to civilians, not men in uniform who were obeying orders

The article hasn't been reproduced in it's entirety and the title has been edited. Should that be allowed as it amounts to deliberately changing the tone and tenor of the piece?

Reported nonetheless.

What a double player :azn: In india, we want to partner, work with them etc, goes to BD, to assure Jamaati, she is kindling old passions yet again :what:
And BAL was primarily responsible for freedom fight. Not the jamaatis or her.

So ****** Begum is coming to her true form. Must say very interesting times ahead , wonder what would uber secular papers like Hindu attribute this anti India stance of her's. China factor only, nothing to do with Islam according to them. If we don't get a leader like Modi then our goose is diffidently cooked.

Actually its the Awamileague that raises the issue to divert people minds from their destruction of the country with gullible people as audience and naturally BNP has to play the card too , to some extent. Its domestic politics in which awami thugs and some of their cheap mentality "intellectuals" on raw pay roll did astronomical PR for 41 years. BNP is far more pragmatic than BAL and doesn't cross limits unless forced. Also consider that KZ was giving a speech to freedom fighters, some of who were actually threatened by BAL to not to go to BNP's gathering. Amazing politics no? People actually don't care about 71 or PAK anymore but its just the desperate ruling party playing their last card (bound to fail) when pushed to a corner .

why the trigger happy approach on your borders with them

Hardly any .. comparatively the number of people who cross Indo-Bangladesh border everyday..a very tiny percentage of people actually get captured even lesser numbers have the misfortune of getting shot.
Compare that to Indo-Pakistan border..where 99% of people illegally crossing will be captured or shot.

After all these are international borders and not their personal backyard.

If a country can not take responsibility for its citizens, violating another's borders..then they have no right to demand answers, as to fate of those people.

1. The Awami League (and its sponsor India) are obsessed with 71 and talk about it day and night, day and night, day and night.

a: To maintain anti-Pakistan feeling and hatred.
b: To highlight their supposed role as the "founders" of the country
c: This obsession with 71 is then tied in with a degree of hostility to "Islamists" (or at times Islam per se) to distance people from Islam, thus encourage secularism.

This secularism then creates a void/vaccum filled in by secular Bengali nationalism which is i: Pan-Bengali (inclusive of west and east Bengali) ii: Hindophilic (e.g. Awami love affair with Durga puja).

The goal then is the surreptitious but incremental secularization of Bangladesh and if possible ultimate Sikkim-style incorporation of Bangladesh in the Indian union.

However none of this is going to happen, and the Awami League secularists (like their counterparts the razakar traitors) have as much chance of making Bangladesh a part of India, as razakar traitors have of realizing their wet dreams of making Bangladesh a colony of Pakistan again.

This Awami League obsession with 71 needs to end.

However not only do Awamis have this obsession so do the razakars/Pakistani nationalists who are still angry at their defeat.
