In a stunning display by the Indian bowlers on the fourth day helped Virat Kohli and company clinch the 2nd Test at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata by 178 runs to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series against New Zealand.
Victory in the 250th home Test also helped India to regain the top spot in the ICC rankings. This is also India’s fourth consecutive Test series win under Kohli at home
Chasing 376-run target, NZ openers Tom Latham (74) and Martin Guptill (24) gave the visitors a solid start but Indian bowlers made a stunning comeback to bowl out NZ for 197 in the fourth innings on Monday.
India struck thrice through their spinners to derail the NZ innings before Mohammed Shami bowled brilliant spell and picked up two wickets in quick succession to put India in a commanding position.
Wriddhiman Saha scored crucial fifties in both the innings and was adjudged man of the match. Cheteshwar Pujara's 87 in the first innings and Rohit Sharma's 82 in the second innings were the other notable contributions for India.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked up a five-wicket haul in the first innings. R Ashwin, Shami and Ravindra Jadeja picked up three wickets each in the final innings.
This is the fourth time Team India has become the No. 1 Test nation since the advent of the ICC Test rankings. India first became number on in December 2009 and remained at at the top position till August 2011.
Earlier in the year, Virat Kohli and his men reached the number one ranking for 38 days between January and February 2016 and just for six days in August.
With a long season coming up, Team India's endeavour will be to win as many Tests at home as possible to maintain vice-like grip on the top spot.
