It is regrettable that Pakistan attempted to “misuse” the U.N. platform, says India’s Ambassador to U.N. Syed Akbaruddin

In a strong rebuff to Pakistan for raising the issue of killing of Hizb-ul commander Burhan Wani and Kashmir at the U.N., India accused it of extolling the virtues of terrorists and “coveting” the territory of others.

The hard-hitting rebuttal by India’s Ambassador to the U.N. Syed Akbaruddin came after provocative remarks made by Pakistan’s envoy Maleeha Lodhi on Kashmir and Wani’s killing during a debate on human rights in the 193-member U.N. General Assembly here on Wednesday.

In her statement, Ms. Lodhi, apart from raising the Kashmir issue, also mentioned the “extra-judicial” killing of Wani, whom she described as a “Kashmiri leader”, by Indian forces.

Ms. Lodhi, who has regularly raised the issue of Kashmir at various U.N. fora, termed Wani’s killing as the “most chilling recent example” of “human rights violations” by Indian forces in Kashmir.

Alleging that the denial of self-determination to Kashmiri people had led to arbitrary detentions, summary executions and other “atrocious” violations, she said, “Its most chilling recent example is the extra-judicial killing last week of a Kashmiri leader, Burhan Wani, shot to death by Indian forces along with dozens of other innocent Kashmiris.”

Hitting back, Mr. Akbaruddin said Pakistan “extols” the virtues of terrorists and could not gain membership of the U.N.’s human rights body because of its “track record”.

Lashing out at Ms. Lodhi’s raising of the Kashmir issue at the multi-lateral world body, Mr. Akbaruddin said it is regrettable that Pakistan attempted to “misuse” the U.N. platform.

“Regrettably, earlier today we have seen an attempt at misuse of this U.N. platform. The attempt came from Pakistan; a country that covets the territory of others; a country that uses terrorism as state policy towards that misguided end; a country that extols the virtues of terrorists and that provides sanctuary to U.N.-designated terrorists; and a country that masquerades its efforts as support for human rights and self determination,” he said.

“The international community has long seen through such designs. Cynical attempts, like the one this morning therefore, find no resonance in this forum or elsewhere in the United Nations,” he noted.

“We remain strongly committed to the promotion and protection of all human rights for all through pursuit of dialogue and cooperation,” he added.

At least 30 people have been killed and more than 250 injured in the clashes between protesters and security personnel after Wani’s killing in an encounter last week.

The U.N. has expressed concern over the tensed situation in Kashmir, with U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon calling on all parties to exercise “maximum restraint to avoid further violence and hopes that all concerns would be addressed through peaceful means.”

Pakistan covets territory of others and uses terrorism as state policy: India at UN
Syed Akbaruddin said at UN that "Pakistan was the same country which failed to influence international community to gain membership of Human Rights Council."

India’s permanent representative to the United Nations (UN) Syed Akbaruddin on Thursday lashed out at Pakistan and accused it of trying to misuse the platform provided by the UN. Akbaruddin was speaking at a high-level thematic debate on Human Rights organised by President of the General Assembly, Mogens Lykketoft.

“Regrettably, earlier today we have seen an attempt at misuse of this UN platform. The attempt came from Pakistan; a country that covets the territory of others; a country that uses terrorism as state policy towards that misguided end; a country that extols the virtues of terrorists and that provides sanctuary to UN-designated terrorists; and a country
that masquerades its efforts as support for human rights and self determination,” he said.

Akbaruddin asserted that Pakistan’s “track record” failed to convince the international community that it should gain membership of the Human Rights Council in this very session of the UNGA.

His comments come in the backdrop of Pakistan raising in the UN the issue of the killing of Hizbul commander Burhan Wani. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had dubbed the killing of Wani as a violation of human rights.

Pakistan’s envoy Maleeha Lodhi had raised the issue of Wani’s killing at the same platform on Wednesday describing him as a ‘Kashmiri leader’ and terming it as ‘extra-judicial’ killing.

Already read it. We would again raise Kashmir issue at UN. Strong rebuff is actually bharati bakwas which we don't care about.

So Pakistan's cries come from the mouth of Obama?

Nope. But we don't use shining self boosting terms like "strong rebuff", "lashes" etc

:omghaha::omghaha: Great reply, Mr. Syed Akbaruddin.

I would very much like to read his statement from a neutral source as we have seen indian media manipulating statements in the past to boost their over inflated ego. So far i havnt seen any none indian source.
Recently they also manipulated statement of US state department in India media which was later proven wrong.

When you start supporting a member of terrorist group, your double-speak will be called out. HuM is a terrorist organization as per EU,USA and India. Wonder what was going on in Pakistani FO when they decided to sing virtues of a commander of a terrorist organization.
