It depends upon the jawan, but extreme lines are irrelevant in the overall discussion because the jawans who scaled the parliament and PM
House in 99 did not have family in there. There isn’t a “fine line” between maintaining discipline and personal interest - it is a grey line of varying thickness and shifting priorities.

It is generally thinner for the jawan than it is for the officer due to their rank, education and training

A friend recently visited Pakistan. His course mate just retired as a Maj Gen. He shared that without any wrong doing he has about 12 crore in assets (including a house). With his pension, he has no need to do anything but to enjoy life in a halal manner.

A US Brigadier general salary is around $100k minimum to $180k depending upon years of service and can get pensions equalling that. However, that generally means that even if the US Brigadier general is a smart saver they would likely at best save up to $2.5 million at the end.

So the Pakistani general is still over compensated for what they do and the impact of it overall.

just want to add that in lieu of plots, the US military members get housing and other allowance that are tax free. They depend on your family size, living area zip code etc. for me, living in Northern Virginia, it’s currently at $2400 ish a month tax free, only the salaries are tax. No taxes when we deploy.
