Imran Khan refused to meet US deputy secretary of state

Saw some negativity around the COAS meeting the American, just a reminder the chief of the army is a civil servant with the rank equivalent to a chief Secretary or the foreign secretary.

Parliament and Cabinet is above him.

Afghan dispute overshadows desire for broad-based US-Pakistan ties

OTH capability for Afghanistan

But Afghanistan remains a factor even in the pursuit for a long-standing partnership with Pakistan, as the US deputy secretary of state said at a news briefing in New Delhi on Wednesday. Speaking to a select group of Indian journalists, Sherman said that the Biden administration was putting together a robust programme for “over-the-horizon” (OTH) capability for Afghanistan.

The top US diplomat, who visited India before coming to Pakistan, did not elaborate this over the horizon capability but a senior US general told a congressional hearing in Washington last week that the United States was holding direct talks with Pakistan over the use of a vital air corridor to Afghanistan.

Gen Frank McKenzie, who heads the US Central Command, expressed the desire for Pakistan’s cooperation at a hearing dominated by demands for punitive actions against Islamabad. The same week, a group of 22 Republican senators also moved a bill in the US Senate, seeking a probe into Islamabad’s alleged role in the Afghan war.

“Over the last 20 years we’ve been able to use what we call the air boulevard to go in over western Pakistan and that’s become something that’s vital to us, as well as certain landlines of communication,” Gen McKenzie said.

Continued engagement

Diplomatic sources in Washington say that despite differences on Afghanistan and other issues, the Biden administration will continue its engagement with Pakistan. According to these sources, future contacts may include the much-desired telephone call from US President Joe Biden to Prime Minister Imran. And there could be more bilateral talks at lower levels as well.

The sources, however, say that in all these talks, the Biden administration will focus on four major points: Recognition of the Taliban government in Kabul, international sanctions on Afghanistan, access to the land-locked country and counter-terrorism cooperation.

Recent statements by senior US officials indicate that the United States does not want Pakistan to recognise the Taliban regime before the rest of the international community does. Instead, it wants Pakistan to continue its efforts for softening the Taliban position on controversial issues, such as inclusive governance, human rights, girls’ education and allowing women to work before extending diplomatic recognition to the regime.

The Americans believe that a change of position on these issues could have a positive impact on the Taliban’s image and pave the way for their acceptance in the United Nations. Individual nations, like Pakistan, should delay their recognition till then.

The United States would also like Pakistan to observe whatever sanctions the

Ofcourse you are winning in Afghanistan, it's time pakistan as a state accept that You won in Afghanistan and recognise Afghanistan, unfortunately your pm is not sure and asking others to recognise the new Afghan govt.

Hope your pm gets that one phone call for all the countries achievements.

LOL PMIK is not recognizing Taliban yet as there was an agreement in SCO that all SCO countries would recognize Taliban government at the same time in one voice.

Why is IK getting praised for refusing to meet a deputy Secretary of State? She didn’t meet with Modi or India’s Foreign Minister. She was given the protocol equal to her rank. It’s only in Pakistan she was given above and beyond treatment. This shows the lack of self respect Pakistan has.

if this self claimed certified honest keeps ruling like this, we will soon become like Somalia
almost all major powers kay sath taluqaat kharab kr chukaq hay bongee khan
Yes we need good relations with US as their slaves starting from Ayub, ending with Musharraf

Given the comments made by her in India about not seeking a broad based relationship with Pakistan - despite us chasing for that - bit of a cold shoulder is fine. This was disrespectful from her and really an added disrespect when considering that the US still doesn’t have an ambassador in the 5th largest country in the world which happens to have nuclear weapons and punches above its weight in geopolitics. It implies they know they will get their way with us eventually without giving much.

I understand, it’s painful for a superpower to fall and fail to a bunch of people in slippers and old guns and they are embarrassed and salty. But if they introspect - they know we were right and even when they were stabbing us in the back with India we were sincerely telling them the truth for 20 years - what we would want any friend of ours to tell us. They relied on complete liars like Amrullah Saleh and Doval and his paid totes who have no honor or loyalty.

Maybe it’s time we give the Americans what they want - a purely transactional relationship. Pakistan didn’t need to give GLOC and ALOC for free since 2018 when all funding stopped. We didn’t need to evacuate every single person via air corridor as soon as possible, giving every single courtesy to them. Close allies for sure we can’t do that for. Look at how Qatar - who have done less than us - has leveraged what they have done for such excellent media coverage across the board, CNN, Fox, print media while we are dependent on Glenn Beck personally being awed by IK by really not much at all in terms of evacuation. We should charge them up the nose for access. But not without getting paid for what we have already provided. There’s no pay in goodwill. Like I said that’s fine with close Allie’s in the EU or China or Turkey or GCC. We help in goodwill all the time.

Given the situation in afg, access is the most valuable thing we have to offer. There maybe some in the US government who think losing a massive chunk from Pakistan to Iran to Turkey to Afg all through Central Asia without even a cursory foothold. But any adult in the room will realize what a loss this would be. Something they can never make up by the Indians substandard intel or relations in that area. I hope we are able to negotiate well. Unfortunately as much as I like IK, don’t have high hopes of this because of his desire to” do the right thing for the sake of it”. This is fine in personal life and helping someone without expecting anything but harmful for a country especially when dealing with a duplicitous super power.

Genera Bajwa…. Well the less said the better. The team gets credit for calling it right in Afghanistan but that’s about it. Maybe I blame over beating IK for Gen Bajwa’s docile demeanor. Either way, there’s rarely been a chief in the last over 20 years who’s gotten less in terms of goodies from the US. I know this comment may get me banned but really if you compare anyone else, we have gotten atleast peanuts before but only insults now. Just getting our own equipment such as the ordered cobras or getting normal assistance or even MRAPs or excess equipment from Afg would have been something to point to. It’s a blessing that China has really got some high quality arms.

Happy to know that IK didn't meet her. On the other hand very disappointed with the 'COAS' meeting her. Who cares who she met in India, COAS shouldn't be meeting her at all, esp after how the US govt is cold shouldering Pak. How ever I did notice that Bajwa was lazily dressed and not in his office uniform, not sure if that means anything or if it lessens the importance of the meeting 🤷‍♂️

COAS met the deputy secretary so it doesn’t really matter if the Prime Minister refused or not. Our country’s foreign policy is formulated by the army, the chief meeting such a low level diplomat of a foreign country is not only a matter of concern but a degradation of the country’s respect.

US finally realize. They have zero influenced and no hands to force anything on Pakistan.

At the end of day this is all that matters. The COAS can't guarantee anything to the Americans. Whatever the Americans seek from Pakistan cannot be materialised. What are the most important assurances the Americans seek?

- The Americans seek military bases in Pakistan. Impossible.
- The Americans seek Pakistani assurances with regards to not recognizing the Taliban. Impossible. Pakistan has always tacitly or openly recognised the Taliban. Besides bigger and more powerful countries like China and Russia are also sending out powerful messages with economic support for the Taliban.
- The Americans seek access to Pak nuclear weapons and delivery systems. Impossible.
- The Americans seek Pakistan to end all relations with China. Impossible.
