Imran Khan has formally launched 'No one Sleeps Hungry' programme

. . .
Look at videos of Pakistan in 1990 when it had a population about 100 Million less than we do now and you'll find little has changed:

These arguments about "overpopulation" have been made since 1798 in fact it may have been ongoing since the times of Tertullian in 160 AD:

Pakistan's large and burgeoning population is actually a massive boon for the nations economy not a hindrance the problem has always been you have governments, both military and civilian, particularly since the 90s that have no clue how to develop the countries economy.

A prime example is the discovery of Thar lignite shortly after Zia's assassination in 1988 through a program he initiated looking for water in Thar. Pakistan is an energy starved nation that imports its oil and gas so what did the country do with this immense domestic resource of fuel that would have created jobs in Pakistan and saved it tens of billions in foreign exchange?

Nothing.

Even now we've continued to do largely nothing.

How about collecting taxes and investing in local industries to eliminate imports, investing in agriculture to increase per acre yields, investing in the development of critical infrastructure like housing and water sanitation, investing in mining?

Lol, well I'm not sure if I'm the usual culprit but I disagree with this approach and think it's absolutely wasteful.

Pakistani governments seem to operate on the model of "feed a man a fish you feed him for a day..." that's it.

The economic liberalization imposed on Pakistan by the Nawaz Sharif government in the mid 90s and followed up on by Musharraf via his FTA to China and just continued under Zardari essentially equated into one large welfare scheme that subsidized everything for everyone.

Based on my previous calculations those tariffs accounted for ~4% of GDP in tax revenue hence why Pakistan's tax to GDP fell below the 10% mark and stayed that way for years.

As per the WB it appears that Pakistan collects more tax revenue as a percentage of the overall GDP than China, Bangladesh and India do... so why is our economy so much worse off?
https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/GC.TAX.TOTL.GD.ZS?locations=PK-IN-BD-CN

It's these welfare programs/schemes.

We're spending so much on imports and social welfare programs and taking on so much debt to do it that there's less than nothing for industries while future governments are inundated with ever mounting debt and large portions of our yearly budget needing to be allocated just to pay off the interest on those debts.

At least what Khan is doing is targeting those subsidies towards the poor which is far better than what the previous governments did but this will accomplish little to nothing in the long run.

We need investment in the FBR to collect taxes, they've been chronically underfunded for maybe decades. Back in FY14 I calculated their budget was somewhere around 500-1400% less than what it should have been considering the size of the Pakistani economy especially when you compare their budget to the IRS, CRA, JTA, etc... and their respective economies.

The FBR doesn't have the money to hire the staff, buy the equipment or purchase the necessary third party services they need to do their job effectively. It needs money to hire and train lawyers specialized in prosecuting tax evasion cases, needs people to perform audits, needs to hire people to investigate/canvas on foot, needs data scientists and super computers to analyze company payroll and imports/exports data as well as satellite imagery to map out incomes based on property and asset ownership.

However if what the FBR collects is just thrown away on imported food, fuel and other consumables it does nothing for Pakistan in the long run.
can we shear hunger index too with it sir
reducing population below replacement rate?
same as china will be better sir

.
Only a retard would find a negative in such initiatives, how dare Imran Khan uses public money to feed and house poor while poor puppo Zardari and Nawaz are sleeping hungry under the open sky

When Z.A Bhutto ran for PM he rode into power on the slogan "Roti, Kapra Aur Makaan" what followed was hyperinflation and the people becoming poorer than they were before he entered office.

Hugo Chavez ran on the campaign slogan "Patria Para Todos" (Homeland for All), he was President for 13 years and what did all his welfare accomplish?

Hugo Chavez supported his country's poor using his nations oil wealth through a host of social programs known as the "Bolivarian Missions" along with heavily subsidizing gasoline for his people which appeared to be a resounding success reducing poverty and unemployment by almost 50% in 12 years.

The problem is that he spent so much money on these social welfare programs, far more than the country could afford, that they robbed his nation of any revenue to invest in local industries to diversify his economy, into agriculture to improve food security, better infrastructure, etc... so when Maduro took over and oil prices plunged the country was thrown into the chaos you see today with hyperinflation wiping out the peoples wealth.

Social welfare programs are great, they have a time and place but Pakistan isn't able to support them and the money could be better utilized elsewhere.

This isn't how you generate wealth and long term prosperity.

My personal view is that he'd be better off putting the money into the FBR and generating more tax revenues then investing that extra revenue into industries and infrastructure particularly building housing for middle and low income families or offering long term no interest or sharia compliant home loans which will create jobs for the poorest segments of society along with dramatically growing the economy.

can we shear hunger index too with it sir

Not sure what you mean by that.

I believe hunger has declined in Pakistan over the years so I guess that's one way we're better off than we were in the 90s.

i dont understand why people can not understand simply math

you have one kid you GDP per capita food per capita will be better
you have two kids divide it to 50-50
you have 4 devise it to 25-25-25-25

its plain simple . 43 percent of Pakistan's population faces food insecurity. Of this number, 18 percent of people in Pakistan severely lack access to food. As many as four out of 10 under five children are stunted in Pakistan
globally A child dies from hunger every 10 seconds Poor nutrition and hunger is responsible for the death of 3.1 million children a year.
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) said 7 million people have died of hunger this year :hitwall:

What you mentioned is correct. But these schemes are at a very small level, the idea is to provide protection to the most vulnerable segment to shield them from the fallout of hard decisions necessary, to achieve what you mentioned in the 2nd part of your post.

that is why crime rate is high
people of upper class and upper middle class have moved to secure societies like DHA /BT
human is cheapest thing in our country
reduced health facilities
reduced gdp per capita
increased hunger
increased unemployment
even lower middle class looking for free food now .

Lol, a burgeoning population is good not bad.

As your population grows they need housing, household products, food, cars, etc...

Pakistan's issue is that it hasn't invested in the creation of local domestic industries to meet that demand instead it just imports everything so instead of generating industries, developing your infrastructure and growing your economy it just grows a trade deficit.

i dont understand why people can not understand simply math

That's not how GDP per capita works.

GDP = Gross Domestic Product = the value of all the goods and services you produce in a country.

As you cut down on the number of people you have, unless you're concurrently moving into higher value added industries, you're also reducing your overall economy size and GDP per capita doesn't actually improve.

However population growth automatically declines as incomes rise because you're moving into higher value added industries or become more efficient and produce more of the same goods you were before using the same resources you were before.

If population growth is so bad why is Canada allowing in over 300,000 immigrants, almost 1% of our total overall population, every year? It's because without those immigrants this country won't survive, 80% of the nations yearly population growth is from immigration:

Dude, Pakistan faces food insecurity because the country doesn't invest in its agricultural sector and is underproducing on a per acre basis almost every crop compared to the US even the global average.

You still have people plowing, tilling, planting and harvesting by hand and ox rather than having mechanized its farming.
Pakistan-farmer-coronavirus-crops_171cedf2a10_large.jpg

The country's farmers are wasting water through inefficient flood irrigation rather than more modern center pivot irrigation.
methods-of-irrigation.jpg

Farmers aren't trained on what to plant and when to plant it, few seem to use modern agricultural practices to prevent pests from ravaging their crops.

Most farmers are just too poor to afford modern agricultural equipment, fertilizers, pesticides, etc... and need help.

If Pakistan can generate more in tax revenues and focuses those revenues into investments within its industries, infrastructure and agriculture/mining you'll see exponential economic growth.

cosmetic bs move by PM!

rather than feeding poor IK grow a pair and hang nawaz and zardari and stop corruption the day corruption ends Pakistan will have enough reaources (if managed properly) to give jobs to these poor!

If we are to solve this problem in food scarcity, we need our farms to become more productive, and maximize the amount of arable land, through proper water utilization. Increase the amount of arable land (by up to 55%) by building the right dams and canals as outlined in the “Pakistan Flood Control System” (see below) should not only allow our population to be fed, but reduce the massive financial losses that can occur by our approx. one in a decade mega floods. These key dams may not generate the most electricity but ensure our water supply.

Also, through modern organic farming, we can sell high value/high price produce to the world (exporting to gulf countries, China, and possibly Europe to earn top dollar), will subsidizing this same food to our people, to maximize the health and nutrition of the people. This will also employ tens of millions, and it is a sector we can maximize the utilization of our large population, will good paying jobs if we make the right kinds of agricultural products.

More and more people will probably be willing to pay for high quality food, Pakistan should position itself to meet this need and by doing so create a sustainable way to pay and feed the population

Disclaimer: the following presentation is not my work and it was prepared for Wapda in 2010/2011, but the government at the time did not seem to have advanced any of its proposals as far as I could tell. I promote it, because I think it is vital to the national development.

btw, the growing population is a blessing if utilized correctly. Now is the time to utilize our population correctly. Most of the world is going through a baby bust, we should count our blessings we are not in such a position. We need only look across the border to see what “getting old before getting rich” (population growth slowing down while the economy stalls) looks like.
