Imported govt bans imported items

Why dont you think so?
Tea is already produced in good number in haripur..simply not widely adopted
Something must be wrong with it. I don't understand if we produce such large amounts why isn't it adopted? kickbacks? commissions? certainly kenya can't pay such.

Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb announced on Thursday that the government has imposed a ban on the import of all non-essential luxury items under an "emergency economic plan".

She made the announcement while addressing a press conference in Islamabad. Shortly after, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif took to Twitter to say that the decision would "save the country precious foreign exchange".

"We will practice austerity and financially stronger people must lead in this effort so that the less privileged among us do not have to bear this burden inflicted on them by the PTI government," he said.

The government's decision comes as the dollar has witnessed a meteoric rise against the rupee over the past few weeks on account of the country's rising import bill, growing current account deficit and depleting foreign exchange reserves. On Thursday, the dollar shattered all records and soared to Rs200 in the interbank market.

During her press conference, the information minister assured the nation that PM Shehbaz was "working day and night to stabilise the economy".

Aurangzeb said that in light of this, it was decided to impose a ban on the import of all non-essential luxury items. "These items are those which are not in use of the general public," she said as she identified imported vehicles as one such item.

Most of these will start coming through another route : smuggling. If there are people willing to spend for something,no govt can ban that product. Dollar will flow out via black market and govt will lose import duties they collect. What a genius move.

Local production
Then anything and everything can be locally produced. But it is easier said than done. Pakistan needs to have the necessary supply chain in place and factor cost of raw materials and engineering components for set up. Where can the capital come from? Even if capital is available, it will take time. :agree:

Palm oil, tea is 5b$

Both can be easily be repaced
Oil can be replaced via canola or sunflower within few months

Oil as in refined petrol, crude oil etc.

it is approximately $20b per year and makes up the bulk of the import bill

People need to understand that Majority of Imports dome by Pakistan are Energy Resources , Machinery , Raw material Medicine and Electronics. And your exports dont even cover these absolutely necessary items import that we cannot substitute with local products for atleast a decade of effort and redical change in Industry.

This luxury banning will be a drop in the ocean. Only way forward to improve Balance of Trade crisis is to gradually increase exports.

As long as this imported government is sitting on throne. Pakistan economic collapse is imminent

Where are the 'press conferences' now?

Dollar reaching 205~ PKR in open market. International investors/manufacturers are suspending operations due to volatility.

Probably 80% of our imports are

1) Oil and Gas
2) Heavy machinery

Everything else is insignificant. The only way out is to increase exports and level up with imports
