Ilyushin Il-476: Options for India

No point in Buying ILs...while flying in Leh it used to carry only 55% of the Payload and stalling of engines...

All this machine is Fuel Guzzling and OPM (Operational Preventative Maintenance) Machine...e

Replacement of used tyres was once of the Biggest issues still not being addressed.

Not late at all. Il-476 developed at time according to needs of RuAF. And while Russia will buy them for $100 mln per plane, India will pay $600 mln for every C-17 that can carry just 30% more payload. Well India obviously is rich country they can afford such expenditures :D

$600 mn per a/c?? More like $200 mn!! Initial deal is going to be more because infrastructure and training has to be taken into account but any follow on deals will be unit price only and no of he start up costs. So $100 mn more for 30% extra lift, ability to land on short and unprepared runways, world class after sales, world class logistics, timely delivery, excellent training etc for only $100 per a/c more it is a bargin!! The Russians have let India down again and again and now are paying for it with their pockets. Hey have literally lost tens of billions to their competitors.

IMHO the C-17 is well worth he price and beats the 476 hands down but of course you have to pay for this!!

If PAF would place an order for 7-11 of these aircraft in 2015 or later then would they allow them to buy these aircrafts as refuelers and transporter???

The figure the US government announced is $4.1 billion for 10 x C17s, so a unit cost of $410 million (system cost), but Boeing never confirmed this. Initially they even rejected it as too low and when you look at the prices other C17 customers had paid, $600 million would have been a realistic figure.

A big advantage of inducting the IL-476 is that a conversion course for pilots would not be necessary. This generally costs a bomb in terms of time and money.

Mate in comparsion to the Indian defence budget these costs are minute.

On the other hand, you have to train 5 crew members for one IL 476, but only 3 for the C17.

2 less crew-members is a significant cost over the span of their entire careers and beyond. Not to mention that the C-17 brings the bonus of being "plugged into" the global C-17 logistics and support program.

Well we could buy a couple for medium lift capability.

Can we use the C 17s even if the US slaps sanctions on us ?? I dont think so, and the chances of US putting India under sanctions are a lot more than Russia putting India under sanctions. On the other hand Russians don't need to put india under sanctions to stop or reduce the supply of spares - they do that already.

Its not 1998 anymore buddy. US will think twice to impose sanctions on us. They did force us to stop oil supply from Iran but ended up making India an exception.

US defense industry see India as big client considering our growth rate of defense budget and more acquisitions to be done in near future.

As soon as we have inducted them, we can use them whenever we want, but of course during sanctions the spare supply will be stopped and the maintenance will rapidly become an issue. IN and PAF had faced that during Kargil, so you have to be aware of that when dealing with the US. It don't even have to be sanctions, but us not fulfilling their end user restrictions, would be enough to limit the spare supply.
Anybody who thinks that the US are now our friends, is simply naive and might have ignored the fact that they delayed the procurement of naval engines for our indigenous vessels, that they denied Israeli radar techs for LCA, that they wanted to tell us when and where to use the US engine in LCA...
It is in the interest of the US to get India to their side against China, just like it was in the interest of them to support Pakistan for decades against India. Whenever the situation changes, the US will changer their route towards us as well, that's why it's good that we remain cautions when dealing with them and that we don't buy all of their fancy stuff in big numbers, to make us dependent on them. Get specialised weapons and techs from them in smaller numbers (6-12 x C130J-30 for special ops, 22 x Apaches, 12 x P8Is) but skip them at the important deals (MMRCA, 5.th gen fighters, AWACS, tankers).

Sancho, i totally agree with ur point, but i think now the situation is completely different than that of the 20th century, US` needs India more than ever, India is predicted to become one of the 3 largest economy in the coming 2-3 decades, this is an important point that US would always like to keep in mind i.e. India is now (& in future) much more stronger in it's dealings with the US. If in future US stops the supply of important spares at the time of emergency of India, the biggest loser will be US itself as than any little trust on US that India has maintained, will be lost forever. In all the defence deals with India both US leaders & private players don't forget to mention that they want to become long term & reliable defence partner of India & the fact that US is offering us latest weaponry like P-8I, C-130j, etc. is itself a proof that US policy has changed (even if marginally) vis-a-vis India.

to escape from the sanctions we should always buy 20%-30% more numbers than required quantity so that we can cannibalise them if required.
