Classic Ilyushin’s 40-year-old Il-76 design has been extensively reworked and will re-enter production in 2014, Dubbed has Il-476, it is a new-generation Il-76 transport aircraft which features new Perm PS-90A-76 engines, a Kupol-M avionics suite from Kotlin-Novator and a new glass cockpit.

II-476 variant offers 10% lower fuel burn, and will have an increased maximum takeoff weight of 210t. The new aircraft will have a range of 2,700nm (5,000km) with a 52t payload, and can also be operated from paved and unpaved runways with an elevation of up to 9,840ft (3,000m).

Russia recently carried out its first flight of this new generation aircraft and has also placed orders of 39 aircrafts for its airforce; Russia also has orders of 30 aircrafts by Chinese air force. aircraft will enter production by 2014 and Russia will target old users to have export success and India and china are largest operators’ of this transport aircraft and both are looking for retiring them in next few years .

“Classic” Il-76s is been operated by many forces in the world and many actually are on the verge of been phased out in next few years, Indian air force currently operates nearly Two Dozen of Russian made Il-76 aircrafts.

IAF operates 17 Il-76MD which are powered by older engines and 6 Il-78MKI Aerial Tankers and 3 A-50 AWACS which are powered by new generation PS-90A-76 engines, IAF some years back had complained that they were not happy with supply of spares for the new PS-90A-76 engines, but that seems to have sorted out.

Indian air force has ordered 10 Boeing C-17 Globemaster III which makes IAF second largest operator of this fleet after USA , and options for more jets are open in the original contract . IAF will consider availability of cheaper II-476.

II-476 will offer Indian air force a cheaper replacement to its 17 Il-76MD fleet and also will require minimal infrastructure and Trained manpower support for this aircrafts and future A-50 Awacs for Russian air force will be based on this aircraft and II-476 could also be one of the platforms on which DRDO developed AWACS could be mounted . “Awacs India “Project requires new long range aircraft and considering current AWACS are based on Il-76 platform.

dude..IL 76 happens to be the warhorse for Indian forces..but now dynamics have changed..we have already opted for C-17.
 
arent they a little late???????
the Russians must ensure Indian about better service, timely delivary & spares support until then its not easy for them to convince Indian for their product.
 
The 476 is only interesting in regard to tankers, since the stretched cabin might allow to carry another fuel tank. However, it still can't refuel the C17s or P8Is.
Another point why IAF won't buy them is, that the cargo hold is still not wide enough and the payload not high enough to let them carry Arjun or T90 MBTs.

That means it can operate from Kargil. :)

The recent military visit to Russia means more Mi-17s and may be 7 of these for PAF. How much life does our Il-78 have? 10 or 15 years?

The IAF has already thrown its hat in with the much more capable C-17 and the "AWACS India" will be a Airbus or Boeing commercial airliner like A330 or 787 not a cargo plane and not the IL-476. The Russians have shot themselves in the foot and now India is looking elsewhere at better systems.

You have sources for that or just assumptions ? Russia is no mood for large-scale military exports
to Pakistan anytime soon. And those IL-78s you have are second-hand ac from UKRAINE, Russia never
sold you those.

Mi-17s? Yeah thats a possibility...Russia sells Mi-17s even to NATO countries like Turkey, so yes
thats a possibility.

Not late at all. Il-476 developed at time according to needs of RuAF. And while Russia will buy them for $100 mln per plane, India will pay $600 mln for every C-17 that can carry just 30% more payload. Well India obviously is rich country they can afford such expenditures :D

Number of C-17s ordered are just too small to make any significant impact over choosing IL-476 over follow on C-17s.

You are quite right there. There is however insider talk that India's IL-76s and IL-78s will
be upgraded with IL-476s systems to extend their service life.

India currently has 24 IL-76s and 6 IL-78s...

and btw, if we spend 2.5 billions on 1 aircraft carrier that should have been delivered years ago,
why can't we spend 600 millions on C-17 that will be deliver on schedule, if not ahead of it?
 
i think it'll prove to be a good platform for DRDO's new AWACS as we r currently using IL-76 version for Phalcons plus they pretty cheap compared to their western counterparts

The only thing that i want is that India should engage with Russia for spare part manufacture of these planes if we opt for them...:D

India isn't rich. It's Russian delivery schedule in everything is messing up. So it's just diversification of supplies. I think India will go for C-17

Exactly and RuAF don't need an IL 476 with the capability to carry MBTs or heavy/big vehicles, because they have numerous AN 124s to do that. India don't and that's why IAF searched for an aircraft that can do it according their requirements and found the C17.
So when RuAF will have AN70s with 47t of payload, IL 476 with 52t of payload and AN 124s with 150t payload, IAF will use just one aircraft to do the same with 77t of payload and which solution will be more cost-effective? ;)
Personally I still say IAF needs something in the AN 70 class that could be procured in higher numbers, because unlike RuAF, IAF needs more short to medium range capabilities to transport vehicles and troops.
