Spratly Islands is also not too far from the coast of Vietnam, it is within the control of coastal missile system ...

Pure military analysis:
'hit and run' is learnd from PLA，PLA can do the same, after all , Viet is near , and so long is its coast line, so narrow is its land, which PLAA and PLAN can launch missiles from anywhere on SCS. if Viet harried, for 'reciprocity treaty' , China could harry with missiles too, it is not escalation. then the next consideration: China and Viet has to compare who has more and better missiles; who can sustain longer; who can tolerate more.
BTW：see the example: Libya and US war in 1973-1986, i am not sure what exact mean of you 'hit and run', if you attact civil ship such as oil tank and container vessel, China will have more reasonable reasons to blow you.

I personally think that there will not be a war between China and Vietnam, at least in next ten years. Chinese leaders have learned the history and are inteligent enough to understand that China cannot win in such a war. China has too many enemies and the enemies are waiting for a chance to divide China into smaller parts. Some recent activities of China and some show-off are only to hide internal problems such as Tibet, Xinjiang ... and a power struggle.

If there is a war, it will be the war between China and Taiwan. However, China needs the approval from US.
