Idoc has received FDA approval for a stroke detection algorithm
January 15, 2020

The algorithm scans brain CT scans and detects signs of arterial obstruction. Any delay in diagnosis and treatment of stroke increases brain damage This is Idoc's fourth algorithm that gets FDA approval

Med-tech company Aidoc has received FDA approval for a new suite of algorithms that detect arterial occlusion in brain CT scans. Idoc's platform automatically analyzes artificial intelligence using imaging scans and alerts the radiologist about unusual findings that may require urgent diagnosis and treatment. This is the fourth IDOC algorithm that gets FDA approval, and the company notes that integrating the new algorithm with the company's algorithm that detects signs of intracranial bleeding can provide coverage for two of the leading causes of stroke: intracranial hemorrhage and cerebral artery occlusion.

Stroke is the major cause of disability in adults in the Western world and the second cause of death worldwide. According to the Ministry of Health, there are approximately 15,000 new cases of stroke every year in Israel. Stroke occurs when there is a sudden blood supply to the brain, leading to rapid brain cell death and neurological damage that may be manifested by speech, weakness or paralysis of the limbs and walking difficulties. Stroke is a medical emergency, where any delay in treatment increases the irreversible brain damage and risk of death. Each minute of stroke, about 1.9 million neurons die and about 14 billion synapses die.

Reduce diagnostic time by one third
Idoc's platform interfaces with hospital servers and scans, in parallel with the radiologist, the patient's imaging scans in the emergency room. Using in-depth learning algorithms and models based on big-data analysis of millions of photographs and scans, the system can automatically detect abnormal findings such as intracranial hemorrhage or spine fractures, prioritizing for radiologists the scans that may indicate emergency situations that require urgent care. For example, a study at Rochester Medical Center found that Idoc's system shortened the diagnostic time for intracranial hemorrhage in the emergency room by 33.6%.

Idok was founded in 2016 by three members of the IDF's Talpiot unit, Elad Wallach, who serves as CEO, Michael Berginsky and Guy Reiner. The company also has a partner in Dr. Gal Yaniv, who specializes in radiology.
