Destruction of a Hamas terror tunnel near the Erez Crossing by the IDF, May 5, 2018. (photo credit: COURTESY IDF SPOKESMAN'S OFFICE)
The IDF on Saturday confirmed that it had destroyed a Hamas tunnel over the weekend.
The tunnels originated in Beit Hanoun and neared the fence. Over the last six weeks, protests on the Gaza border have seen dozens of Palestinians attempting to destroy or cross the fence into Israel. The IDF has claimed that many of those participating in such activities are involved with or operatives of Hamas.
Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, a security hawk, said that Israel would not buy Hamas' "bluff" and has said that the militant group has continued to built terror tunnels for years.
This is the ninth tunnel to be destroyed as of late. In April, the IDF destroyed a Hamas tunnel that was said to be "ready for use," the construction for which had begun after the conclusion of Operation Protective Edge in 2014. In the past, the IDF has used a flooding tactic to render the tunnels useless in the future.
Initial Palestinian reports did not indicate any casualties as a result of the strike.
