Indian Air Force's Jaguar aircraft, a deep strike fighter plane capable of carrying nuclear payload, on Tuesday caught fire minutes before take off at Ambala air base but the pilot got out safely.

Defence sources said the pilot spotted fire during the take off roll, aborted the take off and carried out safe exit.

"Today evening at Ambala air field, a Jaguar aircraft aborted takeoff while getting airborne for a routine night flying mission. The pilot carried out safe and quick exit. The aircraft caught fire," an IAF spokesperson said in New Delhi.

A court of inquiry has been ordered into the accident.

On Saturday, another MiG-21 trainer aircraft crashed in Rajasthan's Barmer district but no loss of life was reported with both the pilots ejecting safely.

The MiG-21 T-69 aircraft, which took off from the Uttarlai airforce station in Barmer, crashed near the airbase.

Ambala Deputy Commissioner Prabhjot Singh, quoting a senior IAF official, said the incident occurred at around 8 pm. "The pilot is safe and has been taken to Army hospital for a check-up," Singh said.

Its a sign rafale + tejas mk1a need to come quickly . 1st mig 21 ,now jaguar :( .Things are not in our favour

Yeah, It's the same vintage Jaguar. I'm surprised that IAF is still flying it. :(

They should had decommissioned it long back.
Wont be decommissioned before 2030. Had a recent upgrade .Although it will be replaced by rafale which will join iaf as early as 2019

Maybe debris entered through the air intake and messed up the engine.

The Jaguar is good for ground attack missions. Why risk Flankers making tactical strikes on Pakistani ground forces ? It is an old aircraft.

In future war Jaguars will become burden for IAF, Rafaels, M2Ks and MKIs have to perform there role, because PAF capabilities and air defense of all three services is getting boosted every year.

Yea..these flying coffins planned to be on air till 2030 it could lose more in future, needed to be grounded asap
Not agreed but they need to update the maintenance facilities plus the pilot training since these jets are very reliable and upgraded even F-16 needs rigorous maintenance and without it they will prove flying coffins you can say any jet.

Jaguar is a pretty safe jet.. we hardy hear any news about its crash... anyways how many jaguar IAF operates..

Do you sleep, dream and wake up thinking & hating Pakistan grow up. If you want to talk about talk in general why bring in Pakistan this and that what's wrong with you people man talk about the life of the pilot who got saved .

This kind of things are extremely rare now a days.It may be some debris that caused this.If that happened, then engine is pretty much done.
