The AN-32 Courier Service of Indian Air Force will start to operate in Kargil from the first week of December.”The service will remain operational as per the requirements of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Kargil during the winter season after closure of the only surface link Srinagar-Kargil-Leh National Highway,” said Advisor to the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Qamar Ali Akhoon at a high level meeting here following the requisition made by LAHDC, Kargil for start of IAF Sorties.

After discussing the pros and cons for smooth operation of the service, it was decided that the AN-32 Courier Service shall operate as per past practice from Srinagar to Kargil and back thrice in a week on every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, while as it will also operate from Jammu to Kargil and back once in a week on every Tuesday.

It was also decided in the meeting that in view of heavy rush of passengers at Jammu, the government will take up the matter with the Ministry of Defence for operation of one additional sortie from Jammu to Kargil for the convenience of the people who get stranded due to closure of Zojila Pass following heavy snowfall in the area.

The Advisor instructed the Deputy Commissioners of Kargil, Srinagar and Jammu to nominate Liaison Officers in their respective district who can easily be contacted by the people for booking of tickets and other related matters.

The meeting, however, was informed that the routine facilities during passenger stay at Srinagar, Jammu and Kargil including arrangement for additional security personnel, transportation, medical aid facilities shall be provided by the local administration.

Mr Akhoon stressed upon the concerned authorities to maintain close coordination for smooth operation of the much needed service to the border district during the harsh winter season.

Why havent they still built the tunnel to make the road all weather!?!

That road link is under construction yet with India's longest tunnel being drilled, still some time.
Another road link from the Manali Himachal is being constructed. Eventually the dependence on Zoji La will reduce as will the need for air-bridges.

Yes.
The only question is when. All these things have been almost a decade in the coming!

When is always the question. A few months ago, part of the tunnel face (abt. 20-30 mtrs) had collapsed. Work was held up till the mountain structure was re-stabilised.

Manalli-Leh tunnel shall be open by 2015 as its more then 60% complete, then it will be 24 hours - 365 days access to leh via himachal pardesh

Hope they'll make srinagar-leh highway all weather asap. Also waiting for Leh to be connected by Rail via srinagar and another route via manali.

IA paranoia about invading chinese army using our roads is well know. Their weird logic was to leave the borders unconnected by road or rail. :cheesy: Thankfully that attitude is now changing.

That apart, I am sorely disappointed in our lack of progress regarding building a medium Transport Aircraft in India. China took early steps by first attempting ToT for An-12 and then making Y-8 right in 1970. That provided a serious impetus to their indigenous aircraft industry.

India needs to start manufacturing a MTA with a payload of 20 Ton ASAP. I think the HAL-United Aircraft MTA project is dead or dying.

We would have a requirement of at least 200-300 aircrafts if we put together both defence and civilian needs in India. Surely we can leverage that kind of requirement into something more substantial.
