IAF vice-chief prefers reverse engg to build defence systems

vicecheifamindia.jpg

IAF Vice-Chief Air Marshal Pranab Kumar Barbora today suggested India should go the Chinese way by gathering technical data to produce defence equipment through reverse engineering.

Addressing a gathering at a convention of The Frontiers of Aeronautical Technologies and 61st AGM in Bangalore, Air Marshal Babora said, “Do reverse engineering. Don’t be scared. Our neighbours are already doing it. If someone does not give you, and you want it, do reverse engineering.”

His comments, however, might not go down well with Americans and Europeans, who are finding it hard to protect their intellectual property rights.

Reverse engineering is a process of analysing a technology to ascertain how it was designed. The knowledge is then used to build the equipment or system or make improvements to it without using any physical part of the original.

Critical of the defence industry’s inability to be self-reliant in producing indegenous systems for defence and aerospace requirements, Air Marshal Barbora said, “We have got the best brains, but it has to be focussed to get the product.”

Prodding the defence establishment and manufacturers to go for joint ventures and get the technological knowhow of systems, Barbora said: “No country has produced fighter aircraft on its own. It has been a joint effort of like-minded countries.”

Barbora said India was technologically less literate than Russia and China because it had no access to middle-level technologies following World War-II. “Now, a lot of private players have emerged in India, but they are playing rough because of rules and regulations.”

He also asked the private sector to focus on core competence instead of trying to manufacture the entire aircraft from scratch. “We must not dilute our core competency,” he said.

Citing China’s efforts, the Air Marshal said while the country was already producing entire airbuses, Indian companies were proud and satisfied to produce a few small parts like doors and undercarriages.

We dont need to do reverse engineering, our growth might be slow while doing R&D but a steady one.....

yes reverse engineering aka copy pasting is equivalent to stealing,we should not do that,it is not a permanent solution to the problem, our growth may b slow by the r and d process, but onlt that is the right method

The Vice-Chief's comments are unethical, unprofessional and totally uncalled for! He needs to keep his mouth shut! Seriously, I mean, we are in the middle of MMRCA aircraft evaluations, got big-ticket item shopping list with MNCs clamoring for the share, and then comes along a guy who mouths off telling all and sundry to copy foreign tech, that too illegally? C'mon, where's the professionalism?

Buddy, MMRCA dosent need to be reversed engineered, they themselves are coming with TOT:D

I thought according to many Indian guys in this forum, reverse engineering is stealing. So this guy should be arrested for advocating being a thief.

Sir there is difference between reverse engineering and Copying.... just to clear a difference:-

Reverse engineering is process of analyzing and studying a existing device and then recreating the same logic/device by maufacturing themselves. This ensures testting and quality of the new device same as old. This should also be done with the consent of manufacturer or when licence gets expired few e.g. are remixing of original songs, writing old codes into new language/platform etc..

Copying is what you see from others and modify and this falls under copyright law violation e.g. copying iPhone to iFone..

Of course, they are! But we are also buying C-130Js, evaluating C-5 Galaxy and are presently 'checking out' the various contenders of MMRCA. We are going to buy one, but what if the vice-chief's comments are misconstrued as being an open ticket to copy the tech from say EF-2ks or even Rafales' while buying F-18sh with ToT, hypothetically? That is going to hurt India's reputation and big companies would not like to do business with us then.

Without permission from OEM, reverse-engineering or copying, both are the same - same wine - different bottles!

also p8i posiden is also coming,if we go by the reverse eng way,we may temporarily produce the system but after that no big names will b ready to do buisness with us and will b forced to produce third grade tech derived from the reverse engineered copy

Reverse engineering is the art of not reinventing the wheel ;)

Yup, for China it sure helps. But then, theres a hell lot of difference in making an exact copy of a chiseled wheel out of stone and developing modern alloy wheels with the best tires!!

So what if these big corporations don't want to do business with us how long we as a nation are going to buy weapons from others.Going by your theory does the systems produced by ISRO are third grade tech.Reverse eng is just a starting point we have expertise to create a second version with our added input in any reverse eng products which will be better than original.
