Missiles to be put on 83 Mark 1A LCAs for which order has been placed with HAL.
HIGHLIGHTS

  • Jets to replace MiG 21s & MiG27s of the air force
  • 23 LCA Tejas orders have been placed so far
  • 40 planes initially to be LCA Mark 1, 83 planes to be of Mark 1A category

Seeking to enhance the capability of the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, the Indian Air Force is planning to equip it with a long-range missile of the Meteor class which will help it get an edge over the jets of the adversaries.

The missiles are required to be equipped on the 83 Mark 1A LCAs for which an order has been placed by the air force with the public sector unit Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.

"The request for proposal has asked the aircraft to be equipped with a long range beyond visual range missile of the class of Meteor which can take out enemy aircraft in the range of more than 100 kilometres. This would help the LCA get an edge over the aircraft with adversaries," said government sources.

The LCA Mark 1A, which will be lesser capable than the LCA Mark 2 which is under development by the DRDO agencies, lacks certain capabilities when compared to the other planes but with a longer range missile, it can take down the enemy aircraft without coming in their striking ranges, the sources added.

Both Pakistan and China do not have a missile in the range of the Meteor which has been developed by a European consortium and would be equipped with the Rafale combat planes that are being acquired from France by India. India has bought a package of the European Meteor missiles along with the Rafales and may prove to be game changers due to their beyondvisual-range striking capability of over 100 km.

The sources said that till the Kargil war and a few years after that, the Indian Air Force had complete superiority over the Pakistan Air Force as it did not have any beyond-visualrange missile fitted on their F-16s or the Chinese supplied planes.

The Meteor missile was not part of the Rafale deal that was being done by the UPA government but when Modi decided to go in for an emergency procurement of the Rafale planes from France, the IAF desired to include the Meteors as part of the weapons package.

During the Kargil War, the Indian side had two beyond-visual-range missiles which included the French S530D and the Russian RVV AE missile which deterred the Pakistanis from using its fighter plane fleet in the Kargil war with India, the sources said.

"The over-arching consideration was the BVR missile capability of IAF fighters which impinged unfavourably on the mission success probability," former Pakistan Air Force officer air commodore Kaiser Taufel had written in his blog about the war.

"One good thing about the Meteor is that it has not yet been integrated with any American-origin aircraft and the Pakistani F-16s or the Chinese-origin JF-17s can't get them in the times to come as well. The possibility of the Chinese integrating them is also ruled out," a source said.

No. AIM 120 C5 is equivalent to R-77-1.
Meteor is equivalent to brand new Aim-120D.
Pakistani AIM-120 C5 are inferior to AIM 120 C7.

All of these including PL-15 are BVRMs.

Will anyone fire at these ranges? maneuverability at shorter ranges is equally important, if not more.

This is really in indeginous aircraft.

Yesterday they had news about an Israeli radar and today European missile.
The only Indian thing in this junk will be the pilot.....maybe they will get a gora to fly it as well

they did paint the plane.. so they are doing some thing

Tejas is indigenous, and not in the fact that it doesn't have every single subsystem in it originating from India RIGHT NOW, but in the fact that it will eventually have every single component made in India.
It is indigenous in the fact that Tejas has given way to infrastructure that will help us build next gen aircrafts for a long time to come, it is indigenous in the fact that our private sector is now making subsystems for Tejas, it is indigenous in the fact that we have started R&Ding previously denied technology like turbofans and AESA radars and surely enough we are getting there.

Yes, Tejas Mk1A will have the Israeli EL/M-2052 but it is a crucial step before Uttam AESA is inducted, which is being tested on relevant aircrafts as we speak.

Also, we are parallelly R&Ding long range BVR programs as well.

It would have been better if India makes its own missiles for Tejas.

RIP - Made in India

It says a missile of Meteor class.

It could as well be the Astra Mk2.

Let's play a game.
How many countries have developed an AESA radar and a BVR missile?

Tejas will carry Astra Mk1, Derby, Derby-ER, R77, Astra Mk2 and maybe Meteor too. We can integrate whatever we want, since we developed the aircraft unlike some who still only makes wings for a """JV""".

SFDR isn't ready yet talking about Astra mk2 is far fetched. Derby-er is best suited if Elta's radar is being considered for mk-1A.

Thanks to the in-house developed electronic fly by wire system, India can equip its fighter jet with any missile that it wants without requiring the help of foreign technicians. So Tejas will now be equipped with both Indian made Astra and the worlds best AAM.

Don't strain your brain too much on this. Being a Pakistani it will be hard for you to understand the complexities involved in equipping a fighter jet with different types of weapons.

the meteor is superior to the aim-120d in (terms of range) were working with the Japanese on integrating an aesa seeker on it too. the yanks are working on a missile similar to the meteor to replace the aim-120 family.

the difference between the 120-c5 and c7 is only range.

from what i gather the sd-10a has similar capabilities to the c5 albeit with a slightly greater range.
then again, the chinese do have the pl-15 which is purportedly to have the same range and the 120-d. id imagine pakistan would get this missile after the induction of the jf-17 block 3.

as for india getting the meteor on the tejas? i doubt it, the work required would be astronomical.

Of course we Pakistanis can't compete with you...You Of course are working in a call centre and your name is Kevin....And it's the best call centre in the world and it's indigenous and it's lap has a fly by wire developed by the Vedic message centre on 2 phudu street. But Of course you don't have a toilet. Have a nice day and a cup of the warm golden juice that you love for medicinal properties

So now indeginous means that it's given you infrastructure.....lol

Redefine English. Only an Indian would do that

they did paint the plane.. so they are doing some thing
I am sorry....I stand corrected

You can stick to the etymology of words in the English language while we deal with more important things and increase indigenous content of Tejas every year.
