IAF seeks govt nod to deploy Sukhois near China border

The Indian Air Force has sought the defence ministry’s approval for ramping up a strategic airbase near the Chinese border in Ladakh to support full-scale fighter operations, a reflection of India’s new assertiveness against Beijing. Venturing into uncharted territory to fortify India’s defences

in the sensitive northern sector, the operationally critical Western Air Command (WAC) is pushing for upgrading the Nyoma airstrip into a “major” base capable of launching an entire range of operations.
WAC chief Air Marshal N.A.K. Browne said on Friday, “The idea is to expand Nyoma into a major airbase from where we can operate each and every platform in the air force’s inventory, including fighters. The proposal is being examined by the ministry.”

The Nyoma airstrip, 20 km from the Line of Actual Control between India and China, was activated last September after more than four decades.

Browne said: “It will take about four years to get Nyoma ready as a major base after we get the defence ministry’s nod.” The air force’s AN-32 transport planes have undertaken training flights to newly-operationalised airbases in Ladakh, including Nyoma, to prepare its air and ground crews to operate these airstrips regularly.

The force wants to exploit airstrips at Daulet Beg Oldie and Fukche (two km from the LAC) to support troops deployed in India’s farthest frontiers, close to areas illegally occupied by China and Pakistan.

It is also laying an elaborate network of radar systems and sensors along the LAC to fortify its air defence capabilities.

Humble Indian Airstrip Near China Border Could Become Major IAF Air Station

If a brand new Indian Air Force (IAF) proposal is approved by the Ministry of Defence, the Nyoma advanced landing ground in Ladakh -- and a whisper from the Chinese border -- will be transformed into a major air force station, capable of operating anything the IAF may choose to deploy there -- fighters, transports or helicopters. The government is examining an IAF proposal, though there are no indications on when a decision will be made to begin work.

In September last year, the Indian Air Force landed an An-32 (photo) at Nyoma, for the first time in decades. In June this year, Indian Defence Minister AK Antony was flown to Nyoma to inspect the site. Plans to similarly develop the Fukche strip -- south-east of Nyoma -- have been dropped for now as a result of runway length limitations and swampy water pockets that flank the strip.

Air Marshal NAK Browne, Commander of the IAF's Western Air Command indicated that the IAF's newer generation fighters -- he specifically flagged the Su-30MKI -- could be based at Nyoma if necessary. He said the MKI had been specifically developed for high-altitude deployments and operations.

If China deploys J-XX Jet fighters along the border then for sure you will not say "it's not an aggressive move at all,it's just for the defense of the country,so no one need to worry..".

Will it gonna be happen soon or after the Next batch of SU30 MKI procurement?

If china feels its threatened it is free to do that... Right now India feels so .. so China shouldnt care much.... As for J-XX when we hear that name or that word.... you know our legs are trembling out of fear :agree::cheesy:

our missiles based in Shanghai can hit New Delhi in minutes.

behavior yourself, or we can teach you how to be a responsible citizen of the region.

Good for national interests

And buddy there will be no use for those missiles in targeting Delhi coz it will just escalate the situation :welcome: from a border skirmish to a full scale war.

And i don't see that happening anytime soon :toast_sign:
