Army gets final nod to deploy 50,000 more troops along China border - The Times of India

NEW DELHI: The government has given its final go ahead to the Army for raising a corps along the China border which will include the deployment of 50,000 additional troops there at a cost of around Rs 65,000 crore.

The 17 Corps, the latest and the 14th such formation of the Army, will initially be based at Ranchi in Jharkhand and after development of infrastructure, will be moved to Panagarh in West Bengal. This will be the first corps with strike elements to be deployed close to the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

The defence ministry has given the government sanction letter (GSL) to the Army in this regard with complete details of the new formation to be raised and the funds sanctioned for the purpose, government sources said here.

The postings of the officers to the new formation have already started and its chief will be chosen from the fresh batch of major generals who have faced a promotion board recently to be elevated to the rank of lieutenant general, they said.

The Cabinet committee on security headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had cleared the proposal for raising the corps in its meeting on July 17.

As part of the plans, the new corps will see the raising of two divisions in Bihar and Assam with their units in Arunachal Pradesh and other parts of the north eastern region.

The sources said the IAF will also deploy its force multiplier assets such as six each of midair refuelling tankers and C-130J Super Hercules special operations aircraft at Panagarh.

The Army had sent the proposal in this regard in 2010 but it was returned by the government which asked the three Services to work together on plans to strengthen their capabilities in that region.

Good! That strike corps would be equipped with missiles including Brahmos and Prithvi regiments too. The corps would have two infantry divisions trained in mountain warfare, one air defence brigade, two artillery brigades, one each engineering and army aviation brigades and two indep armoured brigades. While the artillery brigades could be looking at inducting ultra light howitzers, the aviation brigade could boast of attack and heavy lift helicopters.

Still waiting for:

F INSAS
M 777
OFB 155/45 BOFORS
AH 64
CHINOOK
Additional C130J's

Without these the new strike division is essentially just another holding formation.

Indians are welcome to deploy more troops along the India-China border.
I expect Indian Army to add another 50,000 soldiers.
That will be very good to China.

This is one of the very few points that both sides think is a good decision

India is now bending over backwards in terms of 1962 lesson, why the hell deploy so many moutain troops? Better safe than sorry principle? Hope your ricketing financial ability gonna afford it.

India is quite worrying its ability to fast deploy troops in war time due to its lame road infrastructure.

India will waste mammoth amout of money if China is not gonna attack India, that's called opportunity cost. Instead of lavishing cash, why not improve relationships with PRC? We don't wanna be accused as root cause if India goverment go bankrupt for spending too much on military. India politicians will say: hey, its China that makes us bankruot as hell.

Joke aside, big threat to China by IA doing so.

The most pathetic thing in this world is to stipulate your policy according to your predictation. It causes war.
