Is it possible that the AN32 could have been shot down by a Chinese long range SAM, given that it was flying close to the border ? Could anyone with a good understanding of the region elaborate please?

i dont think so, theres no benefit for china to shoot down that transport unless it was actually in chinese held territory.

Agreed. If this was true don't you think there would be a lot more noise on the Indian side. Planes crash due to (a) technical malfunction, (b) pilot error and (c) weather quite often.
