For the Sikhs, the term Shaheed has a religious connection. One who dies for a religious cause is the greatest Shaheed. In history, during the misl period of the Sikhs, there was even a Sikh misl named Shaheed Misl, whose members were recruited just to become martyrs for the religious cause or in defense of Amritsar/Darbar Sahib. But in the broader sense of the term, becoming a martyr for God, country, in defense of the defenseless is equally respect worthy.

Urdu is indeed one of the languages of India. And as I said about being Quranic word, well Indian Muslims don't have any problem with it. So your concern doesn't matter.

I only brought it up in passing but then I got quoted by like 5-6 different Indians so it built up.

Mr Genius,there are words similar to shaheed (in pronunciation) in other semitic languages too.And Arabic being newest of all semitic languages,it probably inherited it from some older semitic language-It was not an 'islamic invention'

I already explained what shaheed means in Islam pages ago I do not like repeating like a broken record. Many words in many languages equal witness that does not mean the connotation behind it is the same.
