Apart from the slew of products it announced today at its event,
Huawei also disclosed its shipments for the year. According to Huawei’s president of mobile division, He Gang,
the company is set to cross 200 million units in shipments by December 25, 2018.
Back in July when Huawei unveiled the
Nova 3, Huawei’s CEO, Yu Chengdong, revealed they had shipped 100 million smartphones this year. This means Huawei has been able to double that figure in just five months.
This year has been a bag of mixed blessings for Huawei. At the beginning of the year, it was supposed to launch its first phone on America’s network AT&T, but the deal fell through. The reason behind the failure was said to have been due to security concerns raised by the US Senate. So what would have been a big deal for Huawei didn’t pan out.
The brick wall it met at the beginning of the year might have slowed it down but it didn’t stop it from becoming the second largest smartphone company in the world in August,
pushing Apple to third place in terms of market share.
Recently, Huawei suffered another setback as its Chief Financial Officer, Sabrina Meng Wanzhou, who is also the daughter of the company’s founder, Ren Zhengfei,
was arrested in Canada based on US fraud allegations. She has now been granted bail but will appear in court in February.
