Ok guyz i am considering a career switch to software engineering.

I have a feeling that quite a few ppl here belong to the IT sector so i thought it would be a good place to ask.

The guidance that i got from my friends is that software engineering is a low paying, long hour working, thankless and a never ending job ?

Infact they say that hours are so long in this job that often they find themselves spending nights after nights doing programming for just a mediocre salary.

Is it true ?

How much can a entry level programmer earn(In Pakistan and in India)?

Is it hard to find a job in this field(Pakistan)?

Plz tell me any special things i need to know

thks.

If u don't want that ,become a "Govt" employee, is what we say in India. THe fact of the matter is if u like what u do u don't have to worry about the hours.
The Pay scale varies in India alot ' From 10k (INR) a month to about 75k being realistic. I joined for 25k 1year but later quit as im currently perusing my Master in BA ..so .....yea pretty much it.

The demands wary from High lvl coding ,machine based coding(low lvl)..web development(Java, sql, asp etc etc). To DBM and DB creation and upkeep..many other analysis based jobs are also offered to Soft engineers.

Nowadays the starting package is 20k / month.

The package varies according to teh client, project, whether you get any onsite chances, your annual perfomance etc

depending upon ur experience and company and ur skills it may vary frm 25K to 100K or may be more. when you come for call center i think it will start frm 15K. dont knw abt pakistan.

You can't do Software Engineering if you lack of passion and at the start whatever field you choose you have to work for hours. If you don't want to do this than join govt. sector. BTW what is your qualification?

They wary a lot man last i herd it was as low as 5k.
The fact of the matter is u ain't worth **** right out of college.
The degree is nothing but an entry form.
The training u get by a company that selects u out of college(if u get good grades that is "and the cut offs are hilarious") is the reason u get the 20k u do. unless u don't have experience u don't have anything. The Company That trains u incur losses, for that reason they bound ur degrees(make u there Biatche:tup:) for at least 1 year (in happy stories).

In India it depends on company and criteria basis. As per my knowledge various salaries per month for entry level software engineers:

Companies (Currency INR)

Accenture 25000
Infosys 25000
Wipro 26000
TCS 26000
Capgemini 26000
CTS 26000
IBM 27000
CISCO 27000
Samsung 28000
Nokia Siemens 35000
SAP 36000
Oracle 40000
Microsoft 55000
Google 70000

govt sector entry level 25000 to 40000 depending on the job grade.

.
A fresh software engineer earns around 20k here in India on an average. Those recruited through campus earn more. TCS/Infosys/Wipro's pay package starts at 3.5 Lacs an annum.

MNCs offer more. IBM/Cisco/Oracle's pay package can go upto 6.5 lacs for a fresher. Depends on how good you are.

Don't confuse BPO/Call Centre with Software. Even Security people working in my branch get more than 5 K.

Depends on the college you study and its brand value.

I don't get what you are saying. Immediately out of college we have training for about 2-3 months (depending on the company, TCS-2 and Infy 3) and after that irrespective of the grades , you get the minimum assured package that was promised during the campus placement.

@Indian

Thank you guyz for the info assuming that indian rupee is approximately is double of PKR the pay of 20K is quite good for freshers

Here in Pakistan i have been told that i can earn like 30K(PKR) if have 2-3 years of experience.

Now to the next question. Is is true that in this field you have to work like 14-16 hours ?

@Pakistanis

Plz guyz need some info from you tooo.

There is no fixed timing.

It depends on your project, client timings, branch culture, your Project Manager etc.

Personally I had a very chilled out experience in Mumbai where I hardly clocked more than 7 or 8 hours a day (with lunch thrown inbetween) except in extremely rare situations due to some urgent work. But my colleagues in Chennai regularly put in 10-11 hours of work. It varies.

.
It depends on the organization culture, for example i have worked in an MNC where management discourage the late sittings. But in majority yes you have to work on avg 10-12 hours a day.

Not always..During release period you might have to spend that much amount of time. Rest as Grounder pointed out.

hmmm 10-12 hours a day is not a problem.I was told that i would have to work like 16 hours at least half a week and i thought hey if i work 16 hours then there are only 8 left for sleeping.lol

Anyways now that talk has started i want to know that if i am going to make a career switch which field on average has the highest pay?

PS: As far as interests are concerned i really don't have interest in a particular field. I am more of a chill type person. I have always been guided by others on which field to choose. lol
