I met Bal Thackeray only once. Itwas in July 1999. I was a city reporter with the Indian Express , Mumbai. Our city section, Express Newsline had launched a 'Save Vikrant' campaign. The warship had served the navy fornearly 35 years and had played a stellar role in the liberation of Bangladesh in 1971 where its aircraft had strafed shore targets and prevented a seaborne escape of the trapped Pakistani army.
The Vikrant had been retired from the navy two years earlier. The navy wanted the state government to convert it into a museum but it would take the project at least five years to materialise. The warship could not wait this out without a refurbishment because its aginghull would be constantly exposed to the corrosive seawater. The navy had estimated it cost at least R s. 6 crore to dry-dock the carrier andrefurbish its hull so it could waitout the project period.
The navy already had a hard time explaining to the auditors why they clung on to a retired ship. "Besides," one naval officer in the western naval command told me, "if the state government is serious about theproject, let them pay," he said.
Our campaign had been on for over a year and it seemed things were moving forward. Then chief minister Manohar Joshi indicated he was in favor of converting the warship into amuseum. But in February 1999, the ambitious Narayan Rane took over as CM.
Rane made his disdain for the project known. The navy got the message. They green-lighted the auction. On June 7, the the state-owned Metals and Minerals Trading Corporation, put newspaper advertisements calling bids for the historic ship. It seemed the campaign had been lost. The auction had gone through despite intervention at the highest levels: Bal Thackerayhad asked his old friend George Fernandes, to stall the auction.
But the Kargil conflict that was then underway had Fernandes' complete attention. On July 8, the Vikrant was auctioned. The highest bid, for R s. 5.8 crore came from Haryana Shipbreakers. The mood in office was downcast particularlybecause we had invested so much effort in the campaign.
That day, we had to solve the mystery of how the auction hadgone through. We decided to goand meet Bal Thackeray. I remember dashing down to our photo department and looking for Mohan Bane. A quiet unassuming photographer with a graying beard and a wealth ofcontacts.
A few minutes later, I was on the pillion of his motorcycle barreling towards Matoshree, inKalanagar, Bandra (East). We were soon ushered past an endless series of rooms studded with Maratha iconography, Shivaji calendars, busts, crowds of followers, scattered slippers on the marble floor and even a silver throne with lions on its armrests. The Sena supremo sat on a sofa deep inside Matoshree. He was wearing his trademark silk kurta and lungi, his clean-shaved face framed with thick large 70s style eyeglasses. A large portrait of his wife Meenatai hung on the wall behind him.
Thackeray regarded Bane with affection and welcomed him. I sat down beside him, opened a file and explained the story. Thackeray listened patiently and nodded his head. His personal physician, Dr Nitu Mandke had told him of the enormous tourist potential it had for the city.
When Thackeray heard of the state government's recalcitrance, something seemed to snap inside him."They are destroying their mothers," he growled. "Such people are not fit to rule the country." I didn't know who 'they' was. I didn't ask. But his ire was directed at his state government. Thackeray called for his telephone and the chief minister to meet him. There was no question of the auction going through, Thackeray later told us. The state government would pay the R s. 6.5 crores for refitting the warship, he said.
Bane then requested Thackeray to come on board the warship the following day for a photo-op. It was no ordinary photo op.Bane later told me this was to ensure the state government wouldn't back out.
Thackeray thought for a minute and then called for Champa Singh Thapa, his Marathi-speaking Nepali Man Friday. He asked Thapa to cancel his appointments for the next day. He was going on board the Vikrant, he said.
The Kargil war had triggered offpatriotic fervor across the country. It would look good if the Sena supremo was seen on a powerful national symbol in his backyard.
Thackeray then lit a cigar and blew a few smoke rings of contentment. He asked me about my unusual surname,"South Indian?" He told me howmuch he admired former US President Isenhower, whose biography he had just put down. He was then lost in thought. It was time to go. We sought his leave, but Thackeray wasn't finished.
"I have a joke for you," he said. He narrated it poker-faced: Pramod Navalkar (a veteran Sena leader) was once travellingin an aircraft and introduced himself to his co-passenger as the culture minister of Maharashtra. "I'm the chief of the Nepal navy," his co passenger told him. "That's impossible," Navalkar said, 'Nepal doesn't have a navy.' 'If Maharashtra can have a culture minister, why can't Nepal have a navy?' the passenger asked. I remember laughing nervously. The Sena chief had a sense of humor after all. I later realized Thackeray, who had only a faintunderstanding of the navy, had wracked his brains to come up with a nautical-themed joke. It was a cartoonist's repartee.
(Epilogue- Bal Thackeray toured the INS Vikrant the following day. He was accompanied by the Chief Minister Rane and several state government officials. Rane announced the R s. 6.5 crore grant to repair the Vikrant. The ship is still in the naval dockyard Mumbai, as a museum thanks largely to the efforts of Thackeray and, subsequently, Vice Admiral Vinod Pasricha, the western naval commander in 2000. Successive state governments have yet to fulfill the promise ofconverting it into a permanent museum).

i love the name shiv sena. but not the shiv sena party and its chief. whether he is alive or not but the mistake done by him was a mistake. he is a good example for indian politics who has played with caste, religion and state to get a vote and to get a money for their family without thinking about nation, its unity and its security.

@Major shaitan and bhisma you both are talking as if other politicians are angel.... It seems you both fan of congress who killed multi million people.... Thackeray was far better than them.... Like it or not it doesnt matter.... Bengal people not flooding mumbai.... Its people from bihar and its due to bihar goverment.... Its like multi million people rush into your home to never leave again.... i hope you have heard interview of Raj and bal thackeray.... Both of them explained in detail plan of other party like congress who importing other nation's people like bangladesi and pakistani into india for Votes.... Both of them have mentioned it and also told they not against biharis but the way they entering mumbai its bond to expload.... Nothing wrong they said. Am asking you what other goverments are for?.... Have you seen what happened in azad maidan? Forgoten?.... Many muslims (mostly bangladesi and few pakistanis with few indian muslims) brought hell.... Beaten even female police.... For what? Just because what happened in burma??? This is not accepted.... Peace is must.... Everyone has a right to be anywhere in india but to a limit as it can be fatal and it dont take much to spark riots.... Shivsena is the one who threats to maintane peace.... i hope you remember just after what happened in azad maidan what Raj thackeray did.... He brought a biggest rally and than directly warned the people who tried to spark riot in mumbai.... Riots helps negative energy eaters. Peace is must.... Btw bengal was shining once upon a time. Now bengal no more the shiny city of joy. While mumbai is shining. Visit navy mumbai (hub of shivsena).... You will feel like u in europe. Navi mumbai far beautiful than banglore and majority people there are maharashtian.... Most biharis dont go there because that will create slum area yet again. No one is against biharis but bihar goverment should provide jobs to biharis. In mumbai there is not even enough oxygen to breath.... Its getting mess day by day.... Everything has a limit.... If someone feeds u million rotis in an hour than would u eat?.... Its like baloon.... The more air the more risk it will exploade.... Shivsena trying to save mumbai. Be it by threatning.... Peace is must and for peace threatning at times are neccessary.... i hope many of u havent forgot 1990s riots.... Its peace in mumbai due to shivsena who making sure wrong elements dont create trouble in mumbai. Call it politics war or anything.... Its working. Mumbai and Gujarat are on target of wrong people who want to create riots. Both mumbai and gujarat are shining while rest of india nowhere near. Gujarat on lead. Without mumbai and gujarat india wont be on positive side of GDP growth for long.... Peace is what we want.... Few threatnings are ok if peace is ensured for long....

actually he did ! 2 docs , both brothers, who moved to maharashtra and belonged to Madhya pradesh were killed by shiv sena goons some 4 years back . their families came crying back , with no justice heeded to them . i would say he was a strong man who might have done some good things, but lot of bad things.

still i pay my respects as the man deserved some atleast (he was way better than current a..holes )

I am not fan or a party worker for any of Thakare. But can't stand big mouthing here. Let me clear few facts

Nearly 2 million people gather at the funeral of Mr. Thakare. So some of above poster want to say that that many people support the Separetist Man ??? Get you sences buddy

1. Non of "Thakares" is Separetist. Its all Hindi media propaganda. Every state in India has made a law in which recruitment to the locals is preffered were skilled labour is not required and where skilled labour is involved the recruitments are offered to out staters only after they failed to get from locals. All state had a minimum domesile law for state employment. All state uphold the state language as preffered language in state affairs.
2. Anti Bihri and anti UP movements by Sena ( Not MNS ) were the retaliation of the act that few Maharashtrain students were thrown outta trains from Mumbai trains by few Bihari goons. They died. so Sena straighten them up. But unluckily media report it as anti bihar.
3. Anti Bihar act by MNS was due the railway minister. MNS protested to ministry that recruitment adv was not published in Marathi dailes while it was in all Hindi print media. Asperents from Maharashtra didn't even know of the exam. So instead of correcting the mistake Railways decided to continue the process. So it was bound to have repulses. Even this time too media highlighted it as anti Bihari.
4. Bal Thakare take many good decision when Sena was in power. From road to infra structure. He was the among few who stood by Sikh's in anti-Sikh riots.
5. As far as Raj is considered all Bihari leaders and Hindi media is responsible for the worsening the situation. He wasn't saying Biharis shouldn't be in Mumbai. He was saying if you are living in Mumbai live like maharashtrians and NOT like Bihar.
And trust me it's not only him. I can name some of south Indian, NE and some north Indian leaders saying the same thing. But media choose Raj. Guess why ???

You don't need to be an expert to understand that flooding population in mumbai is creating excessive stress on everything. So it has to contain. Now what are options ??? Move existing to welcome new comers or stop new comers ???
Any of the criticisers should travel in Mumbai train to understand what I write here. You don't need to walk in train. You just have to stand in middle and you are carried in the train.

Lastly the Sena and MNS movements which were started against goons where successfully promoted as anti-state. But remember no court is able to prove the charges still date.
And rare than solving the problem everybody is busy showing how bad Thakares are.
